Description	:	Beverly Irene Gates, age 67, of North Liberty died Tuesday, June 6, 2006, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a sudden illness. Beverly Irene Frederick was born June 8,1938, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the daughter of Harold C. and Edna (Dysert) Frederick. Following graduation from Ottumwa High School, she graduated from St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Ottumwa in 1959. She was married to Ron Hampshire and later to Daniel Gates. Read More	Beverly Irene Gates, age 67, of North Liberty died Tuesday, June 6, 2006, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a sudden illness. Beverly Irene Frederick was born June 8,1938, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the daughter of Harold C. and Edna (Dysert) Frederick. Following graduation from Ottumwa High School, she graduated from St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Ottumwa in 1959. She was married to Ron Hampshire and later to Daniel Gates. For over forty years she has been a registered nurse specializing in the mental health and chemical dependency fields. She was an active member of the North Liberty United Methodist Church, where she taught adult Sunday school, was involved in the companion group, and served on the board of trustees. She enjoyed caring for others' pets as "Doggie Daycare", she also enjoyed spending time with her "Golden Friends" group. But most of all, she treasured her family, friends, and her pets, they have always been there for her, as she was for them! Beverly is survived by her mother, her daughters Lisa Fratzke, Rhonda Hampshire, and Kim Calef, grandchildren Vincent, Haven and Clare Abben, Corbin Evert-Fratzke, Jessy and Jackson Calef, surrogate children Jean Walker, Larry Strait, and Joni Frederick, her beloved Louie, and a host of good friends. She was preceded in death by her father, son Monte Hampshire, brother Donnie Frederick, and sister Betty Taylor. Eulogy by her niece, Jean Strait Walker.... Elizabeth Kubler-Ross said: "The ultimate lesson that all of us have to learn is unconditional love, which includes not only others, but ourselves as well." This could have just as easily been something Aunt Bev said, another kernel of her wisdom. It was how she lived really, and she taught this to all of us. I'm not saying I can always give others unconditional love, but I am saying that it's because of her that I even try! She taught me about practicing "an attitude of gratitude" long, long before it became cliché to say that it was more important to focus on what you have than on what you don't have. She knew how to dispense advice mixed with just the right amount of compassion – it was an incredible talent she possessed. We were all laughing last night at Lisa's house about one of her familiar phrases….when you'd just be pouring your heart out to her about some life-problem, and she'd say "well, now you might just consider, here's another way of looking at this…." I loved what Alicia said in the prayer last night about how Aunt Bev made each of us feel like the most special person in the whole world. When I would go to her house for the w/end, she often would have a rose on my bedside table, or a candle burning, and usually a sweet little note saying something like "Don't forget to smell the rose." Traveling with her was pretty much the most fun I've ever had in my life. My first glimpse of the turquoise Caribbean was with her in 1987. Our room was literally 40 feet from the ocean, straight out the sliding doors. Each morning she was up early walking the beach, returning with dozens of shells. She ended up with so many sea-shells on that trip that we couldn't even bring them all home in our luggage! She was so easy to travel with, very low maintenance, taking things in stride that might have had others miffed or disappointed; and always, always up for taking the scenic route! Three summers ago this very month she felt so good that she actually walked all over Hannibal, Missouri with me. She was so excited about going thru Mark Twain's cave. So many times that day she said: "Jeannie, this is so awesome!" Every day was an adventure for her, whether she was on vacation or here at home. Whatever was before her, she embraced it and was present to it, and made it better for all of us. She and grandma have been extremely important influences in our family, the source of our strength, faith, hope, and love. Without them my heart might have closed off long ago. They both have taught me not to be afraid to love, even if it might hurt someday. Well, love sure does hurt right now, doesn't it? This sadness, all these tears we've shed since Tuesday morning, well, it's all tied up in the happiness we've shared. They go hand in hand inseparably. So here is my final birthday love letter to you, Dear and Most Beloved Auntie Bev: You are my hero. Because of you I became a nurse and found my niche in life. You were always fair and wise and so much fun. If someone said they felt guilty about something, you'd say: "I don't do guilt. Fix it if you can, then let it go. Don't do guilt!" You've been trying to prepare us for this day for a long time. You told me to be happy for you if something unexpected happened. And I am. I think all of us are glad because we know this is how you wanted it to be; no prolonged weeks or months of goodbyes. But of course we can never really be prepared for how our hearts will feel when someone so deeply loved is no longer physically present and accessible to us. The way you have loved each of us, that will never leave. The things you have taught us, they will remain in us. Your incredibly strong mother, our family's matriarch; your beautiful and sweet daughters; your wonderful grandchildren…all of whom you loved more than life itself. They will always remind us of you, each in their own way. Aunt Bev, if I could only say one prayer to you over and over, it would be this: Thank you, thank you for everything.
