Another brother, E.J., lives in Kansas City and a sister, Mrs. Charles G. Carothers, lives in Peabody. Clarence M. Finley was born November 2, 1862, in Stark County, Illinois, and came with his parents to Kansas, in the fall of 1870, locating in Brown County, just over the line from Doniphan. He was educated in the district school, and at Highland University. He was married, January 22, 1886, to Miss Maggie Mills, daughter of James N. Mills, of Robinson, one of the pioneer settlers on Roy's Creek. That same year, he went into the mercantile business, in connection with his father-in-law, at Collyer, Trego County, Kansas, where he remained only a year, when he returned, and went into the same business at Leona, where he has been ever since. He served as postmaster one year under Cleveland's first Administration, to fill a vacancy caused by the resignation of the postmaster. He was twice elected a Justice of the Peace for Wolf River Township, in which office he served for three years, resigning in October, upon being nominated as the Republican candidate for Register of Deeds for Doniphan County, to which office he was elected on the 7th day of November, 1893.
