Joyce was born on July 1, 1943 in Georgetown, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Cecil (Doris) Howard, Sr. Joyce knew her Lord, and she lived accordingly in both her personal and professional life. She was a life-long member of Duncan United Methodist Church where she served as greeter. Joyce graduated from Winyah High School in 1961. She obtained a B.S. in Library Science and Art from Winthrop College in 1965. Her first position as a school librarian was at the old Winyah Junior High School on Highmarket Street shortly after her graduation from Winthrop. In 1972, Joyce graduated from Appalachian State University with a M.A. in Media Services. In 2002, she was awarded a Doctorate in Curriculum from Nova University. She has been a South Carolina public school educator for forty-four years, beginning and ending her career in Georgetown County. She retired from Andrews Elementary School in December, 2009, due to her sudden illness. Joyce had a love for beauty, and she worked to refine the tastes of each group of students who passed through her library. At every school she filled her library with classical sculpture, paintings and music. She saw excellence in art, music and literature as truly honoring to the Lord, and she wanted to give her students a thirst for those things. It was important to her that her library was the nicest place her students had been all day. Many students who could find no other safe haven in a school found joy in Dr. Howard's library. In "her" library, students found acceptance and their own dignity. She has undoubtedly touched many lives in several school systems. In her illness she often remarked about how much she missed her students. Joyce is survived by two brothers, Mr. John C. Howard, Jr. and his wife, Sandra, of Mobile Alabama, Mr. Walter Thomas Howard and his wife, Elaine, of Houston, Texas; and one sister, Dr. Melba H. Riddle and her husband, Hal, of Lexington, South Carolina. She is also survived by three nieces, Camile Dorsa and her husband, Todd, of Austin, Texas, Karen Wheeler and her husband, Greg, of Ft. Worth, Texas, Patty Balenseifen and her husband, Dick, of Yukon, Oklahoma; and four nephews, James Hucks and his wife, Vickie, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Nicholas Cecil Howard and his wife, Jennifer, of Houston, Texas, John C. Howard, III and his wife, Julia, of Mobile, Alabama and William Rutledge Riddle of Lexington, South Carolina. She is also survived by several grandnieces and grandnephews. "Aunt Joyce" will be sorely missed. Joyce was predeceased by a sister, Ella Pearl Tucker; and a brother, Donald R. Howard. The family wishes to thank Agape Hospice of Lexington and the ladies of Mary and Mary Caregivers. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church (Capital Fund), 901 Highmarket Street, Georgetown, SC 29440 or Heritage Christian Academy, 649 Barr Road, Lexington, SC 29072.
