Description	:	Dr. Robert S. Dickey was born in Oxford, Chester County, Pennsylvania on May 24, 1837. He was the 2nd son of the eight children born to U.S. Congressman Jesse C. Dickey and his wife Margaret. Robert attended New London Academy and Hopewell Academy, which was founded by the Dickey family, in Oxford, PA. He worked as a teacher before graduating from college. Read More	Dr. Robert S. Dickey was born in Oxford, Chester County, Pennsylvania on May 24, 1837. He was the 2nd son of the eight children born to U.S. Congressman Jesse C. Dickey and his wife Margaret. Robert attended New London Academy and Hopewell Academy, which was founded by the Dickey family, in Oxford, PA. He worked as a teacher before graduating from college. Robert attended Union College in New York and University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, graduating in 1862. His graduate thesis was entitled "Enteric or Typhoid Fever". On Dec. 23, 1862, Dr. Robert Dickey married Laura Jane Watters and practiced allopathic medicine in her hometown near Fallston, Maryland for nearly 20 years. In 1866, Robert & Laura bought 53 acres on the southeast corner of Pleasantville Road & Fallston Road intersection for $3,800 from Thomas Walker. (MdLandRec WHD-18-254) They made their home on that property for several years. Robert was the Census taker for the 1880 Federal Census in his district. In the 1870's, he also served as a trustee of Youth's Benefit School, the local public grammar school. At that time it was located on Route 152 just northwest of the intersection with Pleasantville Rd. There was discussion at the Harford County school board about modernizing and relocating the Youth's Benefit School (In 1910 a new school would be built on Pleasantville Road) . The Dickey children may have attended YBS, however, eldest son, Alex Dickey was listed as having been a student at the prestigious Oakland Boarding School on Harford Rd near Fallston. Dr. Dickey was also a member of the local farmers club. "A farmers club has been organized at the Upper Cross Roads, Harford County, & the following gentlemen are its officers, Gabriel A. McComas- Pres, John Divers- VP, John R. Rutledge- Recording Secty, Dr. Robt Dickey- Corres Secty, Dennis Standiford- Treas"--Aegis & Intelligencer, Sept 6, 1875, p. 2. In 1877, Dr. Robert Dickey ran unsuccessfully as a Republican candidate from Harford County for the Maryland House of Delegates. Dr. Robert Dickey's father-in-law, Alexander Y. Watters died in 1872. Dr. Dickey and Laura purchased the Alex Watters farm called Oakland, a large farm with a busy tannery. Oakland Farm was located on the NW corner Pleasantville Road and Fallston Road intersection. Dr. Dickey worked as a farmer and allopathic physician at Oakland Farm until the Summer of 1882, when he moved his family, including his widowed mother-in-law, to Atchison, Kansas. The Baltimore Sun newspaper wrote: "Dr. Dickey has sold his farm, containing one hundred and fourteen acres, near Pleasantville, Harford County, reserving the growing crops, to Henry C. Bowman for $6,100". It is not known why they moved, but the West was expanding rapidly at that time and Dr. Dickey had a sister who lived in Kansas. Dr. Dickey set up his medical practice in Atchison as an allopathic physician, partnering with Dr. R.D. Hudson. However, the partnership was not to last very long, as revealed in a Jan. 1885 Daily Globe newspaper: "The firm of Drs. Dickey & Hudson has this day dissolved by mutual consent. Dr. R.D. Hudson will continue the practice of medicine at the old stand, No. 1501 Main St over the W. Atchison Drug Store." Dr. Dickey opened his practice at another address: "DR. R. DICKEY-- Office over West Atchison Drug Store, residence corner of Santa Fe & 15th Streets. Telephone 117." (Atchison Daily Globe- Jun 8, 1885) Dr. Dickey was a member of the Atchison County Medical Society and worked as the coroner in Atchison. It is not known if the Dickeys have any descendants. Their oldest son, Alex was married for a short time, but divorced. The two youngest Dickey children, Roberta and Jesse never married. ATCHISON, KAS., March 18.-- Dr. Robert Dickey, 82 years old and for nearly forty years a practicing physician, died here yesterday. He came to Atchison in 1882 from Baltimore, Md. He was elected coroner four years ago and had held that office since that time. He is survived by his widow and one son, Alexander Dickey of Leadville, Col., and two daughters, Misses Roberta and Jessie Dickey, both of Atchison.
