Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, February 19, 2016, in the Leach Cemetery in Cedar Grove, TN with Aaron Sirk officiating. Jim Gentry, Don Gentry, Denny Gentry, Jerry Gentry, John Howard Arnold and Eugene Kirby will serve as pallbearers. Edith Rigsby was born April 20, 1918, at Cedar Grove, TN to the home of Martha Ophelia (Montgomery) and Uris Woodard and died Thursday, February 11, 2016, in Portales, NM. Mrs. Rigsby was born and raised in a family of six girls in a log cabin in the hills of Tennessee. The family did not have electricity until 1940, and running water and indoor plumbing came about in the 1950's, long after she was grown and married. She and her sisters walked the three miles to school in good weather, or rode in a covered wagon in bad weather. She went on to graduate as valedictorian of her high school class. On June 13, 1942, in Biloxi, MS she was married to Wayne Roscoe Rigsby just before he shipped out to serve in World War II. In 1957, the family moved to Albuquerque to find a climate that was better suited to their daughter's health issues with asthma. While living there she began working at the J. C. Penney's store after her children were older. In 1975, they moved to Portales, and she again worked at J. C. Penney's until the store closed. Mrs. Rigsby enjoyed quilting, and had made quilts for each of her family members. She also did a lot of crochet work. Until the age of 96, she raised a big garden, and harvested and canned or froze the produce. She was an excellent cook, and always enjoyed playing with her grandchildren. She was a faithful member of the Southside Church of Christ. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Sam and Marilyn Rigsby of Portales; her daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Boyd Chappell also of Portales; two grandchildren, Chad (Sandy) Chappell and Kyle (Jana) Rigsby; four great-grandchildren, Kaleigh and Brooke Chappell, and Greydon and Kyleah Rigsby; and two sisters, Johnie B (Ray) Kelly of Cedar Grove, TN and Lucille "Preacher" (Charlie) Fry of Walla Walla, WA. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, Opal Howley, Nell Gentry and Ruth Fry, and by her beloved husband, Wayne Rigsby, who died August 7, 2000, after more than 58 years of marriage.
