Beckwith, son of George, Abby Eliza Beckwith, was born near Stanfordville, Duchess Co., New York, Jan. 14, 1859, died in the Horton hospital July 20, 1940, at the age of 81 years, 6 months, 6 days. Beckwith, son of George, Abby Eliza Beckwith, was born near Stanfordville, Duchess Co., New York, Jan. 14, 1859, died in the Horton hospital July 20, 1940, at the age of 81 years, 6 months, 6 days. Mr. Beckwith's ancestors came with the Norman conquerors into England in 1066. They came among the earliest settlers to America in 1635. He came to the young state of Kansas in 1879. A year later he settled on the farm near Hiawatha where for 60 years, excepting a short time spent in western Kansas, he made his home. He united with the Baptist church when a boy. Soon after coming to Hiawatha, when Rev. Conley was pastor, he united with the Baptist church here, has been a faithful member ever since. June 21, 1882, he was married to Miss Nancy E. McQuilken, who survives him. To them were born 3 daughters, 2 sons: Abby, who died in 1912, Amy, Ruth, now Mrs. George T. Miller, Gale, Nathan Beckwith, all of Hiawatha. Besides these he leaves 10 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, a brother Nathan, of Mt. Vernon, N. Y., a sister, Mrs. Clara Austin, of Perry, Okla. A lover of books, good reading, Mr. Beckwith was unusually well informed, yet wholly unassuming. He always showed the greatest respect for the opinions of others, always made those he talked with feel he was sincerely interested in their affairs. It was a rare treat to visit with him. One always felt that here was a man of integrity, honor, "and so he bore without abuse the grand old name of gentleman." His passing leaves a feeling of great loss to his family, his church, his many friends, neighbors. His memory will long be an inspiration to all who knew, loved him. The funeral was held at 2:30 Monday afternoon at the First Baptist church conducted by the pastor, Rev. Frank Rissler, Rev. R. W. Richards. Music was furnished by a male quartet composed of Douglas Hanney, Stanley Moser, C. A. Harpster, Chester Jones. The songs were all favorites of Mr. Beckwith, "Going Down the Valley," "Rock of Ages," "Nearer My God to Thee." Body bearers were friends, neighbors of long standing: S. E. Feller, L. R. Meisenheimer, Harry Buehler, James Kurtz, Charles Nelson, Guy Martin. The flowers which were numerous, beautiful were in charge of Mrs. O. B. Hamler, Mrs. A. B. Clemetson. Those from out of town for the funeral were Mr. Mrs. Tom Davis, of Oskaloosa; Mr. Mrs. Riley Franklin, of Bendena. -The Hiawatha Daily World (Hiawatha, KS); Thurs. July 25th, 1940.
