She is survived by two daughters, Amy Beckwith of the home, Mrs. George Miller of Hiawatha; two sons, Gale Beckwith, Nathan Beckwith, both of Hiawatha; ten grandchildren, nine great grandchildren. Aug. 14th, 1947. ------------------------------------ OBITUARY Beckwith — Nancy Elizabeth McQuilkin, daughter of Robert, Eliza McQuilkin, was born near Blairsville, Pa., Feb. 10, 1862, died Aug. 14, 1947, at her home near Hiawatha, Kans., at the age of 85 years, 6 months, 4 days. With her passing is broken one of the few remaining links between the early days of the community, now. She had an unusually clear, accurate memory of events, people. When relatives wanted to verify some bit of family history, they would say, "We will ask Aunt Nan, she will know." When a little girl of seven she made the long trip by train from Pennsylvania with her mother, two sisters, one brother to Forest City, Mo., where they [were] met by the father, one brother who had come to Kansas earlier to find a home for them. This was in June of 1869. They crossed the Missouri river on a ferry, then drove across the prairie to Hiawatha, a new little town, on to the farm southwest of town where they lived for many years. The open prairie seemed a strange contrast to the Pennsylvania hills, forests. Always alert, eager to learn, Nannie trudged the two miles to school in Hiawatha through mud, snow, hot sun. It was a proud day for her when she got a certificate to teach in the Brown county schools, where she taught several terms. June 21, 1882, she was married to Edward S. Beckwith, went to live on a farm nearby where she lived the rest of her life. She could look from her window, see the old home place. She joined the Baptist church soon after her marriage, was a faithful member always. Her husband died in 1940, after 58 years of closest companionship. She is the last of her father's pioneer family to go. On last Christmas eve she broke a bone in her leg, was bedfast ever since. During this time her daughter, Amy of the home, gave her the most faithful, loving care. Her other children lived near, came to see her. She was the mother of three daughters, Mrs. Abby Greenfield, deceased, Miss Amy Beckwith, Mrs. Ruth Miller, two sons, Gale Beckwith, Nathan Beckwith, all of Hiawatha. She leaves 10 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren. She was a real mother to grandchildren left motherless when quite young. She was keenly interested in the education of her children, grandchildren. A lover of books, she was an inspiration to them always. Rev. R. W. Richards was officiating minister at funeral services held for Mrs. Beckwith Saturday afternoon, Aug. 16, at the Baptist church. Interment was at Mt. Hope cemetery. —The Hiawatha Daily World; Tue.
