Eli was listed as a farmer age 35 born in Ohio, his wife Melinda age 34 born in Ohio, their children listed were; Sarah A. age 11, John W. age 10, George W. age 7, David S. age 5, Mary E. age 3 and Cora F. age 1, all born in Ohio. In the 1900 census, Eli was living in Loudon Twp., Carroll Co., Ohio. He was listed as age 71 born March 1827 in Ohio, his wife Malinda age 60 born March 1840 in Ohio, their son Harvey G. age 29 born November 1870 in Ohio. It also stated Eli and Malinda were married for 43 years and had 10 children, and only 9 were still living at that time. Note --- in the 1900 census they have March 1827 as Eli's birth date, but his obituary in the Free Press Standard, gives March 23, 1830 as his birth date? His obituary in the Carroll Chronicle, Carrollton, Ohio, Friday, February 19, 1904. After a brief illness from pneumonia, Eli Gotschall died Thursday evening, at his home in Loudon Township. Funeral services were conducted Sunday morning by Rev. Mr. Piggott. Mr. Gotschall would have been 74 years of age had he lived until March. He was born in Loudon Township where he spent nearly all his life. For 37 years he had made his home on the farm where his death occurred. No man stood higher in the esteem of his neighbors than did Mr. Gotschall. In daily business he was honest and upright. He united with the M. E. Church in his youth and never departed from the fold. As a church member and class leader he was faithful to his trust. During the five years of Rev. Piggott's pastorate he never missed a service at which Mr. Piggott officiated. The age wife, nine children and one brother, Cyrus Gotschall, survive. The children are John, George, David, Harvey and Frank Gotschall and Mesdames Jerry Lucas, William Beckley, Oliver Gotschall and John B. Simmons. Eli's obituary in the Free Press Standard, Carrollton, Ohio, Thursday, February 18, 1904. Eli Gotschall was born in Carroll County, Ohio, March 23, 1830, and died near Harlem Springs, February 11, 1904. September 25, 1856, he was married to Miss Malinda Yingling, who survives him, with nine of their ten children. In 1855 he was converted, at Harlem Springs. For thirty-seven years he was a member of Simmons Society, and for thirty years was a class leader. He was highly esteemed as a citizen, as a neighbor and as a man, but specially for his devotion to the cause of religion. He loved the church, and to him the means of grace were as a rich feast. He loved to work in revivals, and many a humble penitent was led by him into the light of salvation. At his funeral service, held at the church he loved so dearly and for which he had toiled so faithfully, his chosen hymn was sung -- " I love thy Kingdom, Lord." His removal has caused a great vacancy in the home, the neighborhood and the church. This next was in the Carroll Free Press, Carrollton, Ohio, Thursday, October 13, 1904. There will be offered for sale at the Eli Gotschall farm, three miles west of Amsterdam and three miles east of Kilgore, on Thursday, October 20, 1904, beginning at 12 o'clock, the following personal property: Two milk cows, 2 spring calves, 19 head of ewes, 18 head of lambs, 2 fat hogs weighing 300 lbs apiece, 2 iron kettles, copper kettle, Singer sewing machine, coal cook stove, corn sheller, 200 chickens, 5 tons of hay, 50 bu wheat, 50 bu oats, 100 bu corn on ear, 100 bu winter apples, hay rake, other farm implements. Household goods and furniture. Two 5 year-old geldings, one weighing 1200 and the other 1300 lbs. Will also rent the farm of 90 acres. Terms--All sums of $5 and under must be paid in cash; for all above $5 nine months' credit given; two approved sureties required on notes.
