Her husband worked as a farm laborer, she as a secretary and clerk for the school board, and Aileen as a clerk for the post office department. Their incomes for weeks worked in 1939 were $100/26, $100/10, and $85/16, respectively. Liberty County Times, Chester, MT, 28 Jan 1988: Esther Lille Strissel was born in Butler, South Dakota, on February 15, 1898. She was one of 13 children born to Maria Anna Duerre and Fredrick Strissel. She came to Montana as a child with her family, who homesteaded in 1909 northwest of Rudyard. Esther grew up on the farm and attended school in Rudyard. On May 11th, 1918 she married Robert H. Woods at Inverness. In 1920 they moved to a family farm in Alberta and lived there for the next 17 years. They returned to the farm north of Inverness in 1937 and continued working there until their retirement in 1960. In the years that followed, they wintered in Mesa and summered in Inverness. Robert died in 1974. Esther continued to live at Inverness until 1983, when she moved to the Sweetgrass Lodge in Chester. Because of declining health, she transferred to the Liberty County Nursing Home in 1986, and has lived there since. She died at the Chester hospital on the evening of Thursday, January 21st. Esther would have been 90 Years old next month. She had been an active member of the Inverness United Methodist Church where she served as church organist for many years and also participated in the Ladies Aide & U.M.W. in the 1940's. She served as clerk of the Inverness School for 10+ years. Esther had also been a member of the Eastern Star (Joplin Lodge) and the Daughters of the Nile (Havre Branch). Esther's survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Aileen and Charles Han of Inverness; her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Virginia of Inverness; three granddaughters and three grandsons; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, Elmer Strissel of Ronan and Orien Strissel of Missoula, and numerous nephews and nieces. Esther was preceded in death not only by her husband and parents, but also by six brothers William, Daniel, Victor, Harvey, Carroll and Clarence,; by four sisters, Marie, Mabel, Lula and Lila; and by one grandson, Chuck Han. Funeral services were held at the Inverness United Methodist Church. Friends serving as pallbearers included Waller Hovee, Ralph Peterson, Al Voss, Kenneth Gutcher, Tony Jochim and Kenneth Han. Graveside services were later that afternoon at the Highland Cemetery in Havre.
