His obituary in the Free Press Standard, Carrollton, Ohio, August 19, 2004. George Vahalik, 80, of Amsterdam, died August 16, 2004 in Trinity East Medical Center following an extended illness. He was born March 16, 1924 in Amsterdam, the son of the late Steve and Mary (Grajcarik) Gritser (Vachalik) Vahalik. George was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amsterdam. He worked at the Williams Dairy Farm before enlisting in the Army Air Corps. during World War II. Following the war, he was employed by the Y & O Coal Company for 30 years. He was the Amsterdam Fire Chief for seven years, a member of the VFW Post #332 of Amsterdam, the UMWA and the Ohio Trappers Association. He is survived by four sons, Bruce (Janice) Vahalik of El Cajon, California, Terry (Debbie) Vahalik of Bothell, Washington, Dennis Vahalik and Chad Vahalik, both of Amsterdam; one daughter, Melanie (Louie) Payne of Amsterdam; three brothers, Joe (Katie) Vahalik, Bob (Mary Lee) Vahalik, all of Amsterdam, and Steve (Evelyn) Vahalik of Columbus; and four grandchildren. George was preceded in death on January 28, 1997 by his wife of 52 years, Margaret Jean (O'Toole) whom he married November 30, 1946; one brother, John; and three sisters, Anna, Mary and Eleanor. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, September 3, in St. Joseph Catholic Church at Amsterdam, with Fr. Timothy McCoy officiating. Burial will fellow in Harlem Springs Cemetery where full military honors will be provided by the VFW, American Legion and the DAV. Information researched by Richard Paul Culler of Carrollton, Ohio.
