All his early life was spent in, or near Glasco, and here he received his schooling. He entered the barber business in 1937. He and Clyde Russell formed the firm known as "The R. and R. Barber Shop" here, in Glasco, in 1931, where he made friends of all the "kids and oldsters" of the community. On Christmas Day, 1932, he was united in marriage to Sylvia E. Teasley. To this union one little daughter, Sally Sue, was born, March 7, 1938. He volunteered as a member of the "See Bees" (sic) and his call to service came December 17, 1942. Herman received his boot-training at Norfolk, Virginia, and combat training at Davisville, Rhode Island. He embarked from Huenema, California, for Attu, where he served one year, during which time his mother passed away. After spending a 30-day furlough at home, he went to the navy camp at Clatskanie, Oregon, where he served until his discharge, October 23, 1945. Due to ill health, he located at Kelso, Washington, near the Navy hospital, where he worked in a barber shop, as his health permitted. His death came suddenly Sunday, May 11th, at a hotel in Seattle, Washington, where he had gone to receive a physical check-up at the Navy hospital. After traveling over a large part of the United States he was brought back to be laid to rest in the cemetery across the road from the place where he was born. He leaves to mourn his early passing, his wife and daughter, father, two sisters, and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Griffith Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Clifford L. Moody. A quartet composed of Will Pilcher, Lester Pilcher, James Norton and J.H. Cleaver sang, accompanied by Mrs. O.L. Norton. Clyde Russell, C.E. Halderson, Dr. Wayne Shull, Henry Horn, Cy Carbutt, and Henry Windhorst served as pallbearers, and Mrs. Anna Brown and Mrs. Clyde Russell acted as flower bearers. Interment was in the family plot in Glasco cemetery, with the Griffith Funeral Home in charge.
