He received his schooling and spent his boyhood in that community. His marriage to Hester Williams occurred December 24, 1897, and three children were born to them, Katherine, now Mrs. Ray W. Pilcher; Rachael, Mrs. Carl B. Pritchett; and Herman. Alfred was an energetic farmer and stock raiser in the Glasco community for a number of years, then the family moved to Glasco, over thirty-five years ago, where he centered his interests in buying and selling livestock. His business increased as time passed, and he became a very prominent figure in his profession, becoming recognized and trusted by stock raisers all over this section of the state. He was a public-spirited citizen, giving freely to any cause for good in his community. Several years ago his health began to fail and he was urged by his doctor and family to take life easier. To one accustomed to such a vigorous, active life as Alfred had led, that was almost impossible, so, with the exception of several times he was forced to stay in the hospital, he "carried on," much as he wished, until the last four days before he passed away, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Carl B. Pritchett Sunday, January 23, 1949. His life had been saddened by the death of a much-loved granddaughter, Beth, June 26, 1942; the death of his wife, February 2, 1944; and of his only son, Herman, May 11, 1947. His father and mother, a young sister, Alma, and a loved sister, Mrs. Rachael Cunningham, preceded him in death. He is survived by two brothers, Rollo and Ad, and one sister, Mrs. Emma Ballou, and many other relatives, besides the immediate family: Mr. and Mrs. Ray W. Pilcher, Mr. and Mrs. Carl B. Pritchett, Mrs. Sylvia Rogers, the seven grandchildren, Maxine Pilcher, Mrs. Betty Allen and husband, Maryjo, Virginia Rae, David Carl, and James Henry Pritchett and Sally Sue Rogers, and one great-grandson, Terry Lee Allen. Mr. Rogers was deeply interested in the welfare of his family, and was an ardent lover of children. His grandchildren, who have always lived near him were his constant joy, and will greatly miss "Pop," as they affectionately called him. The entire community was his friend, and mourns his passing. Funeral services were held at the Griffith Funeral Home in Glasco Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 26, at 2:00 o'clock, with the Rev. C.L. Moody, pastor of the Methodist church, officiating. "That Beautiful Land" and "Sunset Hour" were sung by a quartet composed of Leon Amberg, Louis Cool, Jr., Lester Pilcher and James Norton, accompanied by Mrs. O.L. Norton. Casket bearers were Hanson Woodward, Ross Hare, Marion Everley, Vernon Adkins, Clyde Shamburg, and Burton Thompson. Flower bearers were Doll Halderson and Pamela Thompson. Interment was in Glasco cemetery with Griffith Funeral Home in charge.
