Deceased was born near Harrisburg, Pa., May 30, 1833, and had reached the ripe old age of 86 years, 3 months and 18 days. Jacob J. Weltmer and Elizabeth Belk were married in Buchanan county, Mo., Oct. 2, 1856, and Mrs. Weltmer scored her 84th year the day before the death. Of the 7 children 5 are living, besides the good wife, to mourn the loss of a kind husband and indulgent father: Wm. W. Weltmer, Fresno, Calif., Mrs. Carrie _. Wiskerson, Selma, Calif., Lewis O., St. Joseph, and John D. and Charles H., Hiawatha. J. J. Weltmer and family of John Belk came to Brown county from Missouri in 1855 and took claim near Padonia, the year the town was staked off. The next year Mr. Weltmer and Elizabeth Belk were married, and as Kansas had no law yet to legalize marriages, the couple went to Missouri to have the ceremony performed. They left their log cabin on the Walnut and made the journey with an ox team, the usual method of transportation at that time. It was in their cabin home that the young pioneer couple started life. There they remained until 1863, passing thru all the trials and hardships incidental to a pioneer life in Kansas. It was here that E. N. Morrill, weary and foot sore from walking all day coming from the east, knocked at the Weltmer cabin door after night and requested permission for shelter over night, receiving a hearty welcome from Mr. Weltmer and his young wife. And there a warm friendship was formed between Mr. Weltmer and Mr. Morrill that ____ all thru the following years and until the death of the latter. One of the first, and the last, Mr. Weltmer may be considered as the oldest pioneer, living here more years that any other of the early pioneers, from 1855 to 1919, 64 years, a good citizen with a character above reproach, and in, or in sight, of Hiawatha, 62 of these years. In his death Brown county history as lost a valuable source of early information. "Uncle Jake," being of an active inclination and a leader in the early times, and coming early and staying late, has done much in moulding society and other county interests. His word was as good as gold, his friendships strong and lasting. He was a strong supporter of the public schools and served a half century as school board treasurer. He was an ardent Republican, and loyal to his country. A member of the Christian church, had served as county commissioner, and has been a loyal Mason of Lodge No. 35, since 1863. He moved from his homestead in 1863 to his farm 3 miles west of Hiawatha, and from there to Hiawatha in 1906. In their happy Hiawatha home the bride and groom of the ox wagon of 63 years ago, now gray haired yet quite active, have spent the past 13 years pleasantly. Mr. Weltmer even walking down town his last time Tuesday morning. He has departed from among us, a kind good man, a good citizen, friend and neighbor. The funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Christian church conducted by the pastor, Rev. T. V. Hubbell, assisted by Rev. Mr. Hassenpflug. Burial will take place in Mount Hope cemetery, the services there conducted by the Masons. The son, Wm. W. Weltmer, and the daughter, Mrs. Wiskerson, will arrive from California for the funeral.—A.
