There are probably fewer than 20 present Brown county citizens who were born in the county prior to 1859, which was 2 years before Kansas became a state. The Padonia town company was organized in 1859. Mr. Weltmer was 5 years of age when he attended the first Brown county fair held in 1864. Mr. Weltmer admits that he considers it an honor to be referred to as being older than his native state where he has lived for more than three-quarters of a century. Mrs. J. D. Weltmer, also one of the early pioneers, came to Brown county with her parents, Dr. and Mrs. W. E. Moore, in 1866, making her eligible to the 50-year honor residence roll of Brown county. —The Brown County World (Hiawatha, KS) Fri. Oct 4, 1935. J. D. Weltmer, who has been ill for 4 weeks, has been unable to eat any food for a week on account of his throat being paralyzed. Weltmer, 79, for many years a recognized authority on Brown county historical matters by reason of his own personal experience over a long period of years, coupled with his observations of life about him, died early Wednesday morning at his home in Hiawatha. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 Friday afternoon at the Hargis funeral home, Rev. Y. S. Beans in charge, burial following a Masonic service at Mt. Hope cemetery. Mr. Weltmer spent most of his lifetime in Brown county. He was born Nov. 19, 1859, in Walnut creek township, later named Hamlin township. His parents, Jacob-Elizabeth Weltmer, were among the earliest pioneers to settle in this section. He received a good common school education, then began teaching. For 10 years he taught in Brown county schools, 3 years in his own home district. He became interested in politics at an early age, his activities in behalf of republicans continuing thru the campaign of 1938. For 4 consecutive terms he served as trustee of Hiawatha township. In 1899 he was elected county clerk, serving 2 terms. His good friend Charles Curtis, United States senator from Kansas, later vice president, sent Mr. Weltmer to Washington, where he was employed a number of years. Many of his interesting stories of life in the national capital have been printed in The World, as have a great many articles Mr. Weltmer wrote about historical matters in Brown county. He was particularly well versed in political history. Mr. Weltmer was married Aug. 17, 1882, to Miss Hattie Moore, daughter of Dr. W. E. Moore, then of Hamlin. Mrs. Weltmer survives him as do their sons, Lou-Frank, of Hiawatha, Ivan, of Falls City, a daughter, Mrs. Ed Levick, of Seneca.
