Thomas Bestwick was the son of James and Julia Perkins Bestwick, both members of pioneer families of this community. He was born February 14, 1878 on a farm near Sabetha and most of his life was spent in this community. At an early age he learned the barber business and worked at that trade until his health failed. He sold his shop and moved to his farm northwest of town hoping that outside work would benefit his health. A few years later he moved to a farm south of Hiawatha where he lived until seven years ago when he and his wife moved to their present home where he has enjoyed the contacts with the friends of many years in the old home community. He was a member of the Sabetha Congregational Church for more than thirty years and lived a consistent Christian life. While living south of Hiawatha he took an active part in the Willis Methodist Church. Tom Bestwick was a quiet, reserved individual, whose life was dedicated to his family and friends. He was a friend to all his acquaintances and found pleasure in their successes and shared their sorrows. All who knew him mourn his passing. He is survived by his wife, Winifred, to whom he was married Dec. 29, 1909; one brother, John Bestwick of Wamego, four sisters, Mrs. H.B. Burgett, Mrs. M.A. Walton and Mrs. Fred Deaver of Sabetha and Mrs. Charles McKim of St. Helens, Oregon; a number of nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends. Three brothers, Ed, George and Harvey, one sister, Mrs. W.A. Landreth and the parents preceded him in death. Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 16 at the Congregational Church conducted by Rev. S.D. Ogden, assisted by Rev. J.W. Campbell. Interment in Sabetha cemetery.
