Mr. Keenan had been in failing health the past two years. He was up and around, however, and was always cheerful and uncomplaining, daily greeting friends and attending to his business affairs. A week or two ago his condition became serious and he was confined to bed. James Keenan was a life long resident of Iowa and was brought up among pioneer surroundings. He lived the life of a rugged tiller of the soil, helped to develop a new country, performed his share of labor without ostentation, was a worthy citizen, a true neighbor and friend. He regarded the opinions of others with courtesy at the same time maintaining his own. He was a devoted son and brother and greatly beloved by a large circle of nephews and nieces. James Keenan was born in Jackson county, Iowa, October 13, 1861. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Keenan, coming from Ireland, were early settlers in that part of Iowa. They came to Le Mars in 1873 bringing a large family of young children with them and located in Stanton township where after overcoming struggles encountered by the early settlers they farmed successfully and became prosperous. James Keenan attended school in the home community and helped in the work of the farm and later conducted operations on his own account and fared well in general farming operations. For the past few years he has made his home in Le Mars. Mr. Keenan was one of a family of thirteen children, eight of whom have preceded him in death. He leaves two brothers and two sisters who are Bernard Keenan, Michael Keenan, Mrs. James Hughes, of Le Mars, and Mrs. Frank Dunn, who resides on the old Keenan homestead. Mr. Keenan was a charter member of Trinity council, Knights of Columbus, and a devout member of the Catholic church. He was highly respected in the community where he spent practically all his life. The funeral was held Monday morning at St. James church in this city, Rev. Father L.J. Cooper officiating and the interment was made in the St. Joseph church cemetery in Lincoln township where other members of the family are laid to rest. SOURCE: Le Mars Semi Weekly Sentinel, Tues.
