Daughter Anna's Death Certificate documents her birth name as Rogers, the only record I've located to date to do so. Very wonderful to find. I will contact the person who posted the photo to ask for permission to post it to this memorial. EARLIER UPDATE: From a comprehensive family history prepared by sisters Jane & Susan Fiala, descendants of Joanna's son, George William Clement, I learned the following: (1) Joanna's birth name was Ayres according to family knowledge; and (2) Joanna was born in Wayne County, NY. This latter point I subsequently found in an early record for Joanna (obituary I believe, will confirm). After marrying William Clement in 1839, I next found the couple in the 1850 Census which records them living in Ogden Township, Lenawee County, Michigan where William is farming. I will look again for them in the 1840 Census as it certainly seems they should be in Michigan. It is in Lenawee County that Joanna and William start their family before moving to Wisconsin and ultimately to Kansas. Their children are (per Census and Probate records): --Louisa Clement Brew: My 2X Great Grandmother. Born 1841 Michigan, died 16 Apr 1896, most likely in Hiawatha, Brown County, Kansas where she is buried. Louisa was living in Los Angeles as of the 1895 Los Angeles City Directory, listed as widow of William Brew. William is indeed in the 1892 and 1894 California Voter Registration Lists, one of which records him as a Naturalized Citizen as of 1868 in Brown County, Kansas (born in Isle of Man). William's grave is in Orange County, California. Louisa was first married (1860) to Martin Edwards, my 2X Great Grandfather, in Grant County Wisconsin. However the two obviously separated sometime between 1865 and early 1870 as she is recorded in the 1870 Census without him but with 3 Edwards children: Nellie, b ~1861 Wisconsin; George, b ~1864 Wisconsin; and Addie, b ~ 1865 in Iowa. In the 1875 Kansas Census children George (now 12) and Ada (now 9) are living with her; she is living in the same home as 3 of her siblings: Frances, John, and Annette. Louisa's oldest son, John, became by Great Grandfather. See Louisa's FAG Memorial. --Margaret Ann Clement Miller: born 1843 Michigan. I have found some records for Margaret, esp. regarding her marriage to James Miller which evidently ended in divorce around 1900. I have misplaced her file at the moment (24 Mar 2017) but know I have been unable to locate information re her death or burial. I am going to Brown County, Kansas in a few weeks, however, and will check there to see if she might be buried with her parents. --Anna Clement Sprague: Born 11 Apr 1845 Michigan; died 31 Jul 1921 Oklahoma. By 1880 Anna is married to George M Sprague and has 3 children, the oldest of whom is 6, suggesting Anna married George by 1873. See her separate FAG Memorial, recently transferred to me. --George William Clement: born 1847 Michigan, appears to have stayed in Brown County, Kansas after marrying Josephine Sprague (possible sister of Anna's husband George?) and having 8 children. See his separate FAG Memorial. --Frances Augusta Clement (daughter): born 1849 Michigan. Never married, evidently was mentally handicapped based on her father's Civil War pension file, supported by her living with her parents until their deaths in the mid-1880's, siblings for awhile after that and then on the County Poor Farm for the last 8 years or so of her life. See her separate FAG Memorial. --Mary Ellen Clement Chandler: born 1852 Michigan, married Charles Chandler, Civil War Veteran, in Kansas approximately 1871. Mary and Charles moved to Washington State by 1891 and she spent the rest of her life there. A nice obituary regarding her life helped fill in the family's migration history. See her separate FAG Memorial. --John Andrew Clement: born 1853 in Wisconsin; a wanderer and enigma. Likely never married but unsure. Went West after serving briefly in the regular Army in Kansas. Appears he was gold mining in Idaho and Washington. Died in Spokane, Washington in 1924. See his separate FAG Memorial. --Annette Clement Watkins: (Possibly Marian A in 1860 Census and likely "Nettie Dunn" in parents' Probate Record); born 1862 in Wisconsin. Married twice: first to James Dunn approx. 1879 (likely Brown County, KS) and later to Edward Watkins in St. Louis, MO (1900). Died in St. Louis in 1934. See her separate FAG Memorial. As can be seen, Joanna and William raised their children in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Kansas. Joanna created her will in 1884, I assume she was not in good health at approx. 64 years of age. The will, however, sheds light on the family's relative prosperity given their ownership of 4 lots in Hiawatha, Kansas which form the basis of their estate. Joanna's will also provides a glimpse into some personal aspects of their relationship with their children. The estate is provided to Frances "for her lifetime" but "controlled' by her Executors (a son-in-law and another man). Frances is single and living with her parents as of the 1885 Kansas Census, the last Joanna and William appear in; she is age 32 per the Census but really should be about 36. Frances had a mental disability, validated by a few items in her father's Civil War Pension file; that undoubtedly kept her with her parents during their lifetime and the reason they made her their primary beneficiary upon their deaths. After Frances' death, Joanna's will provides for Bequests for their children, the money to be generated from the sale of their (i.e, parents') property. The standard Bequest is $100, but a few are left less: Margaret Ann is left $5; Louisa is left $50; and son John Andrew is left either $50 or $300 depending on whether he "reforms from vices" he apparently had a history of. Since the Will was written by Joanna and includes specific instructions regarding minimal sale prices for her/their property, it appears she may have been the "business person" of the family. Perhaps coupled with William's likely poor health which developed during his Civil War service, she took the lead with real estate purchases and management and thus developed expertise in that area. Joanna died at the end of 1885, a little over a year past the time she wrote her Will. William would die about 5 months later.
