Description	:	Personal History William Clement was born in County Down, Northern Ireland despite some Census records recording him born in Pennsylvania. The County was found on a photograph of William posted on my FamilySearcch page recently by (presumably) another descendant of William and his wife, Joanna. Also on the photograph was written "Came to U. S. with Parents at 4 years old". Since I found his birth date earlier, this would make William's immigration year 1824, quite early. Read More	Personal History William Clement was born in County Down, Northern Ireland despite some Census records recording him born in Pennsylvania. The County was found on a photograph of William posted on my FamilySearcch page recently by (presumably) another descendant of William and his wife, Joanna. Also on the photograph was written "Came to U. S. with Parents at 4 years old". Since I found his birth date earlier, this would make William's immigration year 1824, quite early. I had found several William Clement's in Passenger Lists and so now need to review them to see one is from 1824. Also, it would seem I should find the names of his parents which would be exciting! Regarding the photo, I will contact the person who posted the photo in FamilySearch to ask for permission to post it here. The photo, however, looks very familiar and I believe I found it in a book at the Brown County (KS) Library when I researched there in 2017. William married Joanna Ayres in 1839 in Michigan per the notation on her photo, also found recently on FamilySearch. The earliest record I have for William is the 1845 Michigan State Census (or possibly another Michigan source, the Ancestry source info is not specific) which does not include any other information. However, the 1850 Census shows he and Joanna with 5 children living in Ogden, Lenawee County, Michigan where he is farming. William is recorded as age 30, his wife as 32, and their oldest child as 9 which translates to a birth year of 1841. It therefore seems likely William married Joanna in 1840 or possibly a year earlier. William moved his family twice within America: from Michigan to Wisconsin, and then from Wisconsin to Kansas. According to Federal and State Census records, William's home was as follows: 1845: Ogden, Lenawee County, Michigan 1850: Ogden, Lenawee County, Michigan 1855: Cassville, Grant County, Wisconsin 1860: Glen Haven, Grant County, Wisconsin 1870: Walnut Creek, Brown County, Kansas 1875: Hiawatha, Brown County, Kansas 1880: Hiawatha, Brown County, Kansas 1885: Hiawatha, Brown County, Kansas William is recorded as a farmer in all of these Census' except for 1875 which appears to use the word "Gentleman". I was fortunate to find a Probate record for William and Joanna which included a will created by Joanna and a codicil added by William. The document is 10 pages in length and explicitly states it's a "joint" will. The will is thorough and lists all children living at the time with specific comments regarding a son who was evidently engaged in activities his parents disapproved of. William's codicil addresses a life insurance policy he had secured with the National Temperance Relief Union of St. Joseph, Missouri. William died 5 months after Joanna. They are buried together in Hiawatha Cemetery. Military Service I identified William as serving with the Wisconsin Infantry in the Civil War thru a book posted online entitled "The 36th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry: 1st Brigade, 2d Division, 2d Army Corps by James M Aubery who served with Company G and spent years researching official records of the Regiment in Washington DC after the war ended (no publication date found). A Roster of Company H, Enlisted Men, appears on page 312 that includes William: Clement, William Residence: Glen Haven Date: Feb 29, '64 Remarks: Trans. to VRC Sept 30, '64 The identifier is William's residence as he and Joanna are found in the 1860 Census in Glen Haven with their children. From a quick review of this unit's service, it appears their unit was assigned to fight in Virginia, used primarily Springfield rifles, and lost many men to disease during imprisonment after being captured by the Confederates. I am grateful my 3X Great Grandfather escaped this fate, but the Remark about his transfer to the VRC indicates he was not in good health after 7 months of service. The VRC is the Veteran Reserve Corps created in April 1864 to provide "light duty to partially disabled or otherwise infirm soldiers or former soldiers" (FamilySearch Wiki). This article states about 60,000 men served in the VRC and performed duties such as "guard duty, patrol duty at Washington DC and enforced the draft". The only indication I found of William being "infirm" earlier is in the Probate record for he and his wife which notes he could only make a mark for his signature "due to palsy".
