Description	:	John Frank Ostarello was born May 26, 1920 in Santa Clara, CA, and died July 9, 2004 at Salinas valley Memorial Hospital with his wife and children at his side. He attended Santa Clara University and graduated from Washington State School of Pharmacy in 1042. That same year he enlisted in the Navy and attended Northwestern University midshipman school in Chicago. As a Lieutenant he was shipped to North Africa and assigned to amphibious craft LCI 131. He attended Santa Clara University and graduated from Washington State School of Pharmacy in 1042. That same year he enlisted in the Navy and attended Northwestern University midshipman school in Chicago. As a Lieutenant he was shipped to North Africa and assigned to amphibious craft LCI 131. From Africa, he then sailed to Italy participating in the invasion of Anzio in January of 1944. That march he sailed to England for the invasion of Normandy. On June 6 D-Day his LCI landed on Utah beach. After the invasion, he was reassigned to Hawaii. He trained on the islands of Guam and Siapan for the invasion of Japan. He was discharge from the Navy in San Francisco in July f 1945. After his discharge, he returned to his hometown of Castroville. During the Monterey Centennial Fiesta he met and later married Patricia Castro. From 1946-1963, he worked for Bill Leach, Andy's drug store, SVM hospital as a pharmacist. In December of 1963 he opened Romie Lane Pharmacy located at 505 E. Romie lane. He worked there until he retired in 2000. During those years he was fortunate to have his son Russell follow in his footsteps, became his partner and now runs the pharmacy. He was a Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus in 1948. He served on Palma high school and Ingraham school board. He was a charter member of Corral de Tierra country club. John loved Italy and would travel there often to visit his relatives in Bassano del Grappa. He was extremely proud of his Italian roots, and in 1995 he took 14 of his children and grandchildren to Italy, so they could learn of their heritage. John is survived by his wife Patricia, his children Roger, Ticia, Russell, Marla, Julie and Lisa (his youngest son Gregory preceded him in death) and his grandchildren who lovingly called him "Nonno" Damon, Giana, and Brett Schmitz-Katrina, Alicia and Joe Ostarello, Ross, Matt, and Zach Ostarello-Claire and Caroline Craft, Rebecca and Jessica Ostarello and Paul Joseph Villarreal. The family suggests that any memorial contributions be made to the Carmelite Sisters Of Monterey County (27601 Highway 1, Carmel 93923) or the foundations of Palma or Notre Dame high school. Visitation will be held Thurs from 1-5pm at the Struve and Laporte Chapel. Vigil service will be held Thurs at 7pm in the Struve and Laporte Chapel. Funeral Mass will be held Friday at 10am in the Carmel mission Basilica in Carmel, CA. Burial will be at the Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
