Funeral held Monday forenoon. John J. Shors, who for more than thirty years was a resident of this county, passed away at his home in the west part of town on last Friday afternoon. For the past two years Mr. Shors had been in failing health and about a year ago suffered a severe stroke of paralysis from the effects of which he never fully recovered and had since been confined in his home. The deceased was one of the old time settlers in Pocahontas, having located here when this county was nothing more than a wilderness. Like many of his associates of those early times he met with many reverses and suffered hardships, but with unrelenting effort he persevered and continued to fight the good fight until at last the beacon light of success dawned with all its fullness upon his efforts. He was a quiet, unassuming gentleman who attended strictly to his own affairs. He was a member of that old school that knew no animosity, and was always happy when he knew that all was well with his neighbors. He reared a large and excellent family. His son and daughters are numbered among the best citizens of Pocahontas, although now scattered over many parts of the country. All have a wide acquaintance and numberless friends in this county. The deceased was a native of Bohemia. He was born in the year 1843 and died Friday, Oct. 7, 1921, age 78 years and 7 months. He came to America in 1864 making his home in Chicago, Ill. And the following year was married to Miss Mary Vana. They continued to reside in Chicago until 1868 when they moved to Crown Point, Indiana, residing there two years. They moved back to Chicago, residing there until 1874 when they moved to Chickasaw county, and in 1890 came to Pocahontas county, locating on section one Lincoln township and in 1902 moved into Pocahontas, and on Jan. 23, 1911, the wife and mother passed to her reward, since which time the daughter, Mrs. Sidney Stone has devoted herself to caring for her father and during his recent illness the best of care and medical aid were given by the devoted children of this family. Nine children were born to Mr. & Mrs. Shors, one died in early life, and another daughter, Mrs. Carrie Sernett, wife of F. A. Sernett, died in 1921. Those living are Mrs. Mary Sernett of Rolfe, Frank in Cedar Rapids, Joseph of Beemer, NE. John in Pocahontas, James on a farm in Lincoln township, Edward of Cedar Rapids and Mrs. Sidney Stone in Pocahontas. Those from out of town, besides the children were Mr. & Mrs. Howard Mracek of Howard Co. IA, Mr. and Mrs. A. White and niece of Chicago, IL. Contributed by Joseph Roberts and Ann Bowler
