The following is compiled from two obituaries, one found in Obituary Book A from an unknown paper in the Keosauqua, Iowa Library, the other from the Milton Herald, February 27, 1907. Nov. 20, 1830, John L. Kirkhart was born in Highland county, Ohio, and died Feb. 23, 1907, at his home in Milton, Iowa, aged 76 years, 2 months, and 26 days. On Jany. =26, 1854, he was married to Mary E. Oldaker. To them were born seven children, all of whom, with the wife and mother, were at his bedside the last days of his life. The children are: W. J. of Cantril, Iowa; Lida Borden of Carson Iowa; J. W. of Milton and Henrietta Morris of Milton; L. S. of Mt. Sterling; Ella Alston of Carson; Iowa; Mary E. Corwin of Mt. Zion. In 1861 Mr. Kirkhart enlisted in Co. H, Third Iowa Cavalry, and served faithfully during the war. Forty-nine years age he united with the M. E. church and ever afterward was a faithful follower of his Saviour. He moved from Ohio to Iowa in 1854, spending the following winter in Oskaloosa working at his trade, that of blacksmithing. The next he moved to Birmingham and from there to Cedar township where he lived until 1880, when he moved to Roscoe township, Davis county, and in 1886 to Milton where he resided the remainder of his life. Mr. Kirkhart was a noble man. His was a useful life. He lived for others more than for himself and was beloved by all his acquaintances. He will be sincerely mourned by the people of his home and by all who knew him. The funeral was held Monday, Feb. 25, conducted by the Rev. Martin in the M. E. church, the interment being in the new cemetery at Milton. Many are the friends who mourn his loss from our midst. A truly good and noble man has been called from the earth to the homeland. His suffering was long and severe, but it was borne without a murmur and he quietly awaited the final sermons when he would be called to the heavenly home above. The funeral was held at the M. E. church Monday February 25th at 10:30 a.m., conducted by his pastor Rev. D. R. Martin, after which the remains were laid to rest in the new cemetery. His comrades in the war acted as the pallbearers and laid their esteemed comrade to rest in the city of the dead. Peace to his memory.
