Thursday afternoon, while on his way to deliver Christmas presents to his grandchildren near Valencia, he fell dead. He was 74 years old. Combs's son-in-law, William Dyal, 1103 Central avenue, took Combs and the Christmas packages in his car to Valencia. Arriving at the town, Dyal stopped to buy a pair of gloves. Combs said he would walk up the hill to the house of his son, Scott Combs, while he was waiting for Dyal. He failed to return and a short time later some passers-by found him lying dead in the road. Heart failure is believed to have been the cause of his death. He is survived by his widow and seven children, Scott Combs, of Valencia; William J. Combs, of Eldorado; James Combs, of Wichita; Miss Naoma Combs, Mrs. William Dyal, Mrs. C.C. Commell and Mrs. Horace Pond, all of Topeka. Also on page 6: John Lester Combs, age 74, died Thursday at Valencia. He is survived by his widow and seven children. The funeral will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from Shellabarger's chapel. Burial in Mount Hope cemetery.
