John Nelson was born in Sweden Mar. 5 1817 and died April 14 1904. He was married to Ulrika Forsberg (sic) April 29 1853 and emigrated to America in 1854, landing at Burlington, Iowa. He resided her (sic. there) a number of years and they moved to Oquokwa, Ill., remaining there only a short time, then to Clark county, Iowa. They lived there a few months and then came to Jefferson county, living near Libertyville for a number of years and moved to Blackhawk township in the spring of 1874, and remained there until his death. He leaves a wife and four children to mourn the loss of a loving husband and father, Mary M. Ginkens, of Wayne county, Iowa; John O., Josie E. West, and Columbus, of Jefferson county, Iowa. Eleven grandchildren also survive him and all were present at the funeral which was held at his late residence one mile east of Centre church, Saturday, Apr 16 1904 at 10 o'clock a.m., conducted by Rev. P. H. Hawk of Richland, Iowa. The remains were laid to rest in the McDowell cemetery. The floral tributes were many and beautiful, being mostly roses and carnations. Deceased was christened in youth in the Lutheran church in Sweden and after he came to America he united with the Dunkard or German Baptist church west of Libertyville and remained a firm believer of this faith until his death. He was also a member of the "Old Settlers Association" of Jefferson county, and in his death we lose a noble and patriotic citizen. ----------------- Fairfield Ledger Apr. 20, 1904 A Good Man Gone. John Nelson, one of Jefferson county's best known farmers, died at his home in Blackhawk township Thursday, after an illness of several months. The body was interred at McDowell chapel, near his old home, Saturday, Rev. P. H. Hawk of Richland conducting the funeral services. Mr. Nelson was born near Linkoping, Sweden, March 5th, 1817, and came to the United States in 1854. Four years later he came to this county and had resided here continuously since that time. He was married in his native country to Ulricca Fusby (sic), who survives him, April 29th, 1853. They were the parents of six children, four of whom are now living - John O. and C. C. Nelson and Mrs. Scott West of Blackhawk township, and Mrs. Harry Ginkins of Promist City. Mr. Nelson was a notable example of excellent character, honest, industrious and prudent, prospered in the affairs of this world, reared a creditable family and was held in high esteem by those who knew him. Many friends throughout the county will regret his death.
