JOHN NELSON DIED THIS MORNING Mrs. John Nelson, an old and highly esteemed resident of Jefferson county died this morning at two o'clock at her home eight miles north of this city after an illness of only a few days. Mrs. Nelson is probably the oldest woman in Jefferson county, having the day before her death celebrated her 94th birthday (sic. died two days after her death). Mrs. Nelson has resided on the farm upon which she died for thirty years and was one of the most respected residents of that vicinity. Until her last illness Mrs. Nelson attended to all of her household duties, making a home for her son C. C. Nelson who has remained with her since the death of his father six years ago. Mrs. Nelson was born in Sweden and grew to young womanhood, marrying the man of her choice there. The couple came to America early in their married life and made this their home. Mrs. Nelson is survived by two sons John O. Nelson and C. C. Nelson, both of Fairfield and two daughters Mrs. Scott West and Mrs. Mary Jenkins, both residing near Mitchell, South Dakota. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock at McDowell Chapel and the interment will take place in the cemetery near there. A large number of relatives and friends in this city survive and they have the sympathy of many acquaintances. ------------ Fairfield Daily Journal Friday February 7, 1913 Life of Mrs. John Nelson. Ulrica (sic) Nelson, daughter of Andrew and iary (sic) Fosberg (sic), was born near Linkoping, in Sweden, February 2, 1819, and departed this life at two o'clock Tuesday morning, February 4th, 1913, aged 94 years and two days. She was married to John Nelson on April 29th, 1853. To this union six children were born, four of whom are left to mourn her death. A son and a daughter died in infancy. Her husband preceeded (sic) her in death nine years ago, passing away on April 14, 1904. Besides the four children there are eleven grandchildren and three great grand children. The children are John of Fairfield, Mary M. Ginkens of Mount Vernon, Ill., C. Columbus who is at home and cared for the aged mother, and Josephine E. West of Warner, South Dakota. The grandchildren are Hattie U. Shaffer of Fairfield, Alma J. Droz of Ottumwa, Albert Lee Nelson of Fairfield, Elma Pearl Barker of Fairfield, Lucy Miles of Fairfield, Effie West, Irl West, Roy West, Harold West of Warner, South Dakota, and Blanche Ginkens of Mt. Vernon, Ill. The great grandchildren are Lucile Francis Droz and "baby boy" Droz, and Harrold Lee Nelson (sic). Mrs. Nelson came with her husband to America in the early spring of 1854, settling near Burlington, Iowa, and moved to the home where she died in the spring of 1874, residing there 39 years. She was confirmed in the Lutheran church in Sweden in early girlhood and after coming to this country joined the Dunkard church near Libertyville, Ia. She was steadfast in the Christian faith and her life was a testimony to her trust in her God. She was laid away in her last long rest on Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 5th, at McDowell cemetery. Rev. Hoskins of Richland performed the last sad rites.
