Dec 13, 1940 - Page 1 John Oshy Buried in Edgar December 5 Funeral services for John Oshy were held Thursday, December 5, 1940, at 3:00 p.m., at the McGhie Funeral Home in Edgar, Nebraska, with Rev. Raymond Rush in charge. Ruth Mary McGhie played before and after the services. The body was brought to Edgar Thursday from Omaha by Mrs. J. W. Hazlett of Omaha, Z. A. Hipke of Pocatello, Idaho, and Mrs. Edmond Moreau of Los Angeles, California. Mr. Oshy died in Omaha at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. W. Hazlett, Monday, December 2, 1940, at the age of 95 years, 3 months and 17 days. His death came peacefully. He had been in bed for a few days just previous to his death. Pallbearers were: Ralph McKinney, Carl Eigenberg, Guy Kinkead, E. S. Bottom. Chas. Cook and S. C. Hattan. Interment was made in the Edgar Cemetery. He leaves to mourn his passing two daughters: Mrs. Amelia Hazlett of Omaha ad Mrs. Z. A. Hipke of Pocatello, Idaho; his niece, Mrs. Edmond Moreau of Los Angela, California; two granddaughters, Jean Marie Hipke of Pocatello, Idaho, and Mrs. A. G. Eagle of Kansas City, Kansas, and two great grandsons, Frederic and Robert John Eagle of Kansas City, Kansas. He had worked in Canada, Michigan and Illinois and operated his village smith on Main Street in Edgar for 51 years. He followed his trade as blacksmith for ever 74 years, holding the distinction of being among the oldest active blacksmiths living up to his retirement from active work in June, 1934. Mr. Oshy was born August 15, 1845, in Cold Water, Canada. There he began the trade which beamed his life work, when at 15 he became a blacksmith's helper. After three years he took a job at Bruce Mines, Canada, where he remained for three more years. In 1866 he moved to Lake Superior, Michigan, where he was a mine tool sharpener for three years. Later he worked in Chicago, Pekin, Lincoln and Elsah, Illinois. In November, 1872, he was married to Miss Mary Ann Knott at Elsah. To them one daughter was born. She is Mrs. Amelia Hazlett, 3412 Lafayette Avenue, Omaha. His first wife died after a few years and in the fall of 1875 he remarried this time to Miss Bertha Serini. Five children were born: three sons, who have died, and two daughters, one having died. Mrs. Bertha Hipke of Pocatello, Idaho, survives. They moved to Newburn, Illinois, and in 1883 at the suggestion of his wife's relatives, they came to Edgar. Here they adopted a niece, Miss Marie Serini, now Mrs. Edmond Moreau, of Los Angeles. Mrs. Oshy died in 1913. During the early days blacksmith shops were numerous and business was good. Edgar then boasted one of the best race tracks in the state and John had plenty of shoeing to do for the race horses. and his acquaintance extended far. He made plenty of money then. But the automobile reduced the number of blacksmiths and left only meager incomes, but John stayed with the ship until June, 1934, when he was forced to retire because of failing eyesight. He had no desire to be rushed, but just something to do every day. In John's shop in Edgar many a kind word had its inception. Here many a heart-throb had been alleviated by a kind word from the blacksmith. Here many of the meetings of the local "board of strategy" were held. . While John did not give much thought to political affairs, he was certain that other members of the "board could manage the ship of state with as much efficiency and satisfaction as it had sometime been handled. Following years of good habits, proper eating and living and regular hours for his rest, he reached the age of 95 years, 3 months and 17 days. He was spry for a man of half that age. His keen and alert intellect was unusual for a man his age. He never permitted himself to worry about anything. Never had any bad thoughts and never spoke ill of his neighbor which in a degree had a great deal to do with his longevity. Any child could hear his conversation as he never used any language that was unfit for women or children to hear. And he talked common sense. He enjoyed and loved his friends. Their life was his life. He visited in Edgar quite often after moving to Omaha and his visits with his friends were always looked forward to with joy and interest. John did not appear as one expected an old-time blacksmith should appear. He did not have sinewy arms nor a broad back, not was he a mighty man. Rather he was slight of build and always had been. Through good times and bad Mr. Ohsy continued at his trade. When times were bad he "carried" fa**ers for sizeable accounts for services rendered. True, he seldom lost any such accounts but there is no doubt that he might have been richer in the world's goods if he had been more the business man and less the kindly genial blacksmith who found natural joy in service. He had many friends not only in Edgar but in the many nearby towns. During his residence in Omaha Mrs. Hazlett had taken him around to the various blacksmith shops near Omaha where he made many acquaintances. He will be missed by his many friends.
