Friday last, at her home in this city, occurred the death of Mrs. Margaret E. Smith, widow of Samuel Smith, whose death occurred about six years ago. Mrs. Smith's maiden name was Ream, and she was a native of Ohio. At an early age she came with her parents to Iowa and settled in Van Buren county, where she was married. Her mother and a brother, B. S. Ream, still live in that county. About 13 years ago Mr. and Mrs. Smith purchased the Hemphill farm, south of this city, and removed to it, and Mrs. Smith resided there until about two years ago, when she came to this city. She was the mother of 11 children, all but one of whom are now living - five sons and five daughters. The sons are Dr. F. R. Smith, of Pleasant Plain; Otto, who is still on the home farm; Otis, who is in business in Colorado; and two smaller boys at home. Four daughters are yet at home, while the fifth is Mrs. J. T. Ellyson, of Pleasant Plain. Mrs. Smith was about 55 years of age. She was an earnest Christian woman, and a member of the Congregational congregation, this city. Her life was devoted to her family, but she made many warm friends outside the home circle. Her death was caused by apoplexy, and was very sudden. She complained of feeling unwell Thursday forenoon and retired to her bed. About one o'clock she became unconscious, and died Friday forenoon. The remains were interred Sunday in this city. Rev. M. E. Dwight conducted the funeral services.
