Description	:	Note: this memorial updated September 4 & 11, 2015 - The headstone inscription uses the name as "Sam L Smith", with barely a space between the "Sam" and the "L". Previous cemetery transcriptions/researchers interpreted this to mean a short version of "Samuel L. Smith". However, that may have been a misinterpretation and the name should be though of as "Samuel Smith" if fully spelled out. It is possible that the shorter version was used due to space limitation of type style and the amount of spaces that could be used horizontally when the name was engraved on the... This memorial is being updated to use "Samuel" for the first name. A edit request was also received asking for the suffix "Jr." to be added to this memorial. In deference to the contributor asking for this edit change it is being added to this memorial, but it should be noted that there is no death record available for Samuel Smith since he died prior to 1880 when death records were started to be kept, and none of the obituary or death notices for Samuel directly, or of his wife and/or any children, refer to him with the "Jr." suffix. Evidently there is at least one census report that used the "Jr." suffix, however. The names of his parents were not listed in his obituary or other death notice information. Per a message from contributor Gina: "He was born in Readfield, Kennebec, Maine to Samuel and Sally Davis Smith." Ream Smith. ---------------- Fairfield Ledger Wednesday October 24, 1877 Pg. 3 Col. 7 Mr. Samuel Smith, who lives about a mile south of the city, met with a severe accident yesterday morning, while felling some timber a mile or tow from his house. He had cut down a small tree and was dragging it away when he stumbled and fell, the sharp end of the sapling striking the lower part of the left side, producing internal injuries which will confine him to the house for some time. With the assistance of his little son he succeeded in reaching home after the misfortune befel (sic) him. ----------------- Fairfield Ledger October 31, 1877 Pg. 3 Col 7 The Ledger of last week chronicled an accident to Mr. Samuel Smith, which occurred while he was felling timber and it was thought at that time that his injuries were not very serious. He lay in a very comfortable condition until Thursday night, when he was very suddenly taken worse and died about noon of Friday - the internal injuries receeived on Tuesday having proved fatal. Mr. Smith was a native of Maine, and had been a resident of this county for six or seven years. At the time of his death he was about 61 years of age, and the greater part of his life had been spent in Iowa. As a citizen, a husband and father he was universally esteemed, and was a man of undoubted integrity and sterling worth. His funeral on Sunday was attended by a large number of friends - the services being conducted by Rev. O. Compton Burnett. Mr. Smith leaves a wife and several children in comfortable circumstances. ---------------- Fairfield Ledger October 31, 1877 Pg. 3 Col 8 DIED SMITH - on Friday, Oct. 26, 1877, at his residence one mile south of the city, Mr. Samuel Smith, the result of an accident while hauling wood the previous Tuesday.
