When he did not rise at his usual time this morning, Mrs. Smith went to call him, and found that he had passed away, apparently without a struggle. A physician was immediately summoned and death is attributed to heart trouble. Mr. Smith, though not in the best of health for some time, was unusually well yesterday and retired without any complaint of being ill. He had been a resident of Fairfield practically all his life, and is well known. Funeral arrangements had not been completed this afternoon, awaiting word from relatives from a distance. --------------- Fairfield Tribune Friday Sept. 3, 1920 Pg. 5 Col. 5 & 6 DEATHS SMITH - Otto F., died at his home on West Adams street early Monday morning, August 30, of heart failure. His death was wholly unexpected and came as a great shock to his many friends in this city. Mr. Smith was born in Van Buren county in 1853 and came to this county in 1883. Many years ago he served as a clerk in Howlett's clothing store and in Clarke's drug store. He is survived by five sisters and one brother, one of the sister and the brother living in this city. His widow and four children also survive him. The children are: Mrs. Shan Campbell of Fairfield, Guy Smith of Ottumwa, Mrs. Bryan of Los Angeles, and Mrs. Frank West of Mesa, Ariz. Funeral services were held at the residence Thursday afternoon conducted by Rev. Polly, and services at the grave were conducted by the I.O.O.F.
