Grandma Rogers Mary Ann, oldest daughter of Pleasant and Elizabeth (Morris) Hackleman, was born January 1, 1884 in Osage County, near Jefferson City, Mo. When a small child she, with her parents, removed to near Anderson, Madison County, Indiana, where she grew to womanhood. As a girl she made her way, experiencing unusual hardships, but through zeal and courage, chose a course that developed a most wonderful character. She was united in marriage to Isaac Rogers on October 3, 1863. They continued their residence in Indiana until the spring of 1883, when they moved to Kansas and settled on the old farm 2 1/2 miles north-east of Glasco, where they became what would seem to be almost a permanent fixture in the community. Ten children came to bless this home, six sons and four daughters. Death entered the home and claimed one daughter, Elizabeth, in 1894; one son, Albert, in 1904; and the husband, December 3, 1921. The surviving eight children are: Mrs. Etta Doty, Delphos; Oren, Laben, Jesse E., and Mrs. Nora Ott, all of Glasco; Mrs. Della Ohde, St. Paul, Minnesota; John, of Leota, Kansas; and Charles, Los Angeles, Calif. Also surviving is one half-brother, Tilvan Hawkins, Anderson, Indiana; 27 grand-children, 13 great grand-children, and an entire community to mourn her passing. After the death of her companion, she made her home with her children. Her pleasant disposition, even in long suffering, her patience and fortitude, with always a kind word for all, are but a few of the characteristics that this kindly soul displayed in her daily contact in life's journey that brought sunshine and solace to all with whom she came in contact. Another most wonderful pioneer mother has gone to rest, after a well rounded life that attained almost four score years and ten. She united with the Christian Church early in life, and after coming to Glasco, she and her husband united with the Methodist Church. Her entire life stands as an open book, a testimony to the world of her righteousness. We mourn that we are forced at this time to record the passing of another milestone in the history of a generation. The following was taken from information as told by Mary Ann's granddaughter, Clara Rogers Brown. Mary Ann Hackleman Rogers was born January 1, 1844. On October 3, 1863, she married Isaac Rogers. They had ten children: Etta Doty, Nora Ott, Della Ohde, Charley, John, Oren, Laban, Jesse, Elizabeth, and Albert. Elizabeth and Albert preceded her in death. Elizabeth died on Feb. 12, 1895 due to epilesy. Albert died on May 10, 1904, in Oregon due to an accident when he tried to hop a train and fell. The train ran over him cutting his legs off. Mary Ann, Isaac and their children road a train from Indiana to Solomon, KS. From Solomon they took their horses and wagons and headed west. The settled south of Glasco, KS in a Catholic Community. Mary was not happy there so Isaac bought land two miles north and 1/2 mile east of Glasco and settle there until 1916. On October 3, 1913, Mary Ann and Isaac celebrated their fifieth anniversary. All of their children except Charley of Spokane, Washington, were there to celebrate with their parents. In the spring of 1916, Mary and Isaac moved to Glasco where they made their home until 1921. In the fall of 1921 they closed their home in Glasco and went to live with their son, Jesse, five miles northeast of Glasco. Jesse's wife had passed away and Isaac and Mary planned to help Jesses take care of his home and family. However, Isaac passed away in December. Mary Ann continued to live with their son, Jesse, until Jesse's daughter, Aline, was old enough to help her dad. Then Mary Ann went to live with her daughter, Nora. Nora was not well but did a good job taking care of Mary Ann. Mary Ann passed away January 10, 1933. She is buried in the Glasco Cemetery, Glasco, KS.
