Mary Helen (Perdew) Kennedy was the eldest of 11 children born to: Alexander Glenn/Garrison Perdew, b. 1829 in Marietta, Washington county, OH. and d. Apr. 16, 1894 in Grapeland, San Bernardino county, CA. & Sarah Mae Hoskinson, b. Mar. 6, 1836 in Marietta, Washington county, OH. and d. Mar. 8, 1914 in San Bernardino, San Bernardino county, CA.
Alexander Glenn/Garrison Perdew and Sarah Hoskinson were married abt. 1851 or 1852.
After their marriage, they lived for a time in Ohio and then moved to Sioux City, Iowa. In the July, 2, 1860 census, they were living in McKinney, Collin county, TX., as were his parents, William & Rebecca Perdew. Shortly afterwards, in about March 1861, they began the wearisome trek to California by ox-team with a large group of immigrants, taking with with them three of their first four children. (A boy, William, had died in Iowa at the age of 10 months.) (*Note: The Civil War broke out on April 12, 1861 and there were rumblings of war before that - so is it conceivable they chose that moment in time to emigrate in order to avoid getting caught up in the war?) They took the Overland Trail - Oregon Trail to the California Trail- from Missouri, and eventually following the Old Spanish Trail through the lower corner of Utah and Nevada, and then into California, around Sacramento. Their daughter, Texanna 'Anna' Kibby Perdew was born on the trail, in Monterey, CA. on Nov. 20, 1861. They then went south through the Cajon Pass to make their home in the San Bernardino Valley (Grapeland). Their son, Joseph Perdew, (born Oct. 4, 1864) was the first of their children born in Grapeland, CA. where they settled.
Alexander and Sarah (Hoskinson) Perdew had 10 children: 1) Mary Helen (Perdew) Kennedy, b. 1853 in OH., d. Aug. 1, 1917 in San Bernardino, CA. 2) Rufus Putnam Perdew, b. Daily Times-Index (San Bernardino, CA.), P. 1, Col. 4 Tue., Nov. 22, 1898 HORSE THIEVES WEAKEN Consider Discretion the Better Part of Valor. After a Ride of Two Blocks They Hitch the Horse and Take to Their Heels. Although there have been several very bold attempts at stealing in this city since the hobos arrived, one occurred last evening that probably ranks as the boldest. A man attempted to steal a horse and buggy and upon being asked by a friend of the owner of the outfit what he was doing, cooly stepped into the rig and drove off down D street. Mrs.B. M. Wall was calling on Mrs. J. R. Kennedy at the latter's home on D street between Third and Fourth, and had tied her horse to a telegraph pole in front of the house. Shortly after 8 o'clock Mrs. Kennedy had occasion to step to the front door and happening to look at the horse she saw a man just in the act of driving off with it. She called to him, but as he did not answer, the lady thinking that perhaps she was mistaken, went into the house and asked Mrs. Wall if the horse belonged to her, but by the time the ladies could reach the door again the man was driving down D street at the animal's best pace. A call was sent in for the police who at once started after the man. The animal was found tied to a post on Street below Second but the man was not to be found, and although the horse was left where it was tied for a couple of hours he did not return, he evidently having seen the ladies rush out of the house as he drove off, and knowing that the officers would soon be on his track, had tied the horses and started off on foot.

San Bernardino Daily Sun (San Bernardino, CA.), P. 6, Col. 3 SOCIAL Fri., Jun. 8, 1906 The announcement in THE SUN this morning, of a quiet wedding which was solemnized last evening, will cause much surprise among the many friends of the bride, Miss Emma Morgan. The ceremony which united Miss Morgan and Joseph Mitchell (Mitchel) Pummerville (Pumerville), was pronounced by Rev. Mark B. Shaw, of the First Baptist church, at the home of the bride's mother, Mrs. Mary H. Kennedy, in D street, at 8 o'clock. Only the immediate family were present. The bride wore a beautiful gown of cream lace over silk. The bridal pair were passengers last evening on the Santa Fe overland for Chicago, expecting to spend the summer in the east. A part of the time will be spent with Mr. Pummerville's relatives in Michigan. They will return to California in September. The bride of last evening has been for a number of years a valued member of the corps of teachers of the city schools, having taught three years at the Fourth street building, also at Ontario and Needles, always with conspicuous success. On account of ill health, Mrs. Pummerville resigned as teacher at the Urbita school soon after the beginning of the school year. The good wishes of many friends follow her on the eastern journey. Mr. Pummerville has made warm friends in the city during his residence of a year and a half.
San Bernardino Daily Sun (San Bernardino, CA.), P.6, Col. 3 & 4 Thu., Aug. 27, 1908 Changes to Be Made by Business People Several shifts in the business district are scheduled for the first of the month or soon thereafter, the first in the list being the removal of the J. R. Kennedy's jewelry store, which will go two doors west, to the room recently vacated by the insurance, Loan and Land company. Mr. Kennedy finds the space he is about to vacate crowded for his establishment, and learning there was a possibility of obtaining quarters in the St. Charles building, made haste to lease them. When the Key company moved, it was understood that the Charlton store would occupy the additional space, it having the lease or at least an option for a lease, but for some reason plans were changed, and made it possible for Kennedy to get the room. The small storeroom he vacates in the Ingersoll building will be occupied by Mrs. Mary H. Kennedy, with her toilet goods and hairdressing establishment now located on E street.

Mary's parents were both b. in OH. The record states that this was a first marriage for John and Mary - but it was a second for Mary. San Bernardino Daily Sun (San Bernardino, CA.), P. 5, Col. 3 Sat., Oct. 26, 1912 Proceedings In Local Courts STILL ANOTHER WOMAN IN DIVORCE Sensational Charges Are Made in the Action of the Jeweler's Wife. Sensational are the charges of Mrs. Mary H. Kennedy in a divorce action against her husband, John R. Kennedy, a well-known local jeweler, the papers of which have just been filed by Attorneys Daley & Byrne. The notice of the filing of the suit was served on Kennedy, it is declared, as he alighted from a train from Los Angeles. On the same train was the alleged co-respondent named in the complaint, so it is said. Mrs. Margaret Kelley, wife of a local barber, is the woman named by Mrs. Kennedy. Mrs. Kennedy's Demands In her suit, Mrs. Kennedy demands the family home, valued at $5,000; half of the community property which includes Kennedy's jewelry store valued at $10,000; $100 a month alimony; and attorney's expenses of $500. For the past two years the fact has been known about town that detectives have at times trailed Kennedy, and at the time Mrs. Kennedy, who was unable at the hour to secure a detective, camped outside of the door of a rooming house, it is said. There is only one woman named in the complaint, although according to Attorney Daley, there is a possibility that an amendment may be filed in which, if it is thought necessary, other allegations will be made. The Kennedys are well known about San Bernardino, this having been their home for many years.
Los Angeles Times (Los Angeles, CA.), P. 15, Col. 1 Sun., Oct. 27, 1912 DIVORCE ACTION Mrs. Mary H. Kennedy, wife of John R. Kennedy, a jeweler, has filed a sensational action for divorce and names Margaret Kelly as co-respondent. It is said that the wife, who is seriously ill in a local hospital, has for several years had detectives trailing her husband and that the suit is based on evidence they have gathered. She asks for half of the community property which is estimated at $10,000 and possession of the home, worth $5,000.
San Bernardino Daily Sun (San Bernardino, CA.), P. 8, Col. 3 Fri., Dec. 6, 1912 Proceedings In Local Courts KENNEDY FILES A DEMURRER TO SUIT John R. Kennedy yesterday filed a demurrer to the sensational divorce suit brought recently by his wife, Mrs. Mary H. Kennedy. The demurrer recites there are not sufficient facts recited in the complaint to enable an answer. (*Note: A demurrer is an objection that an opponent's point is irrelevant or invalid, while granting the factual basis of the point.)
San Bernardino Daily Sun (San Bernardino, CA.), P. 10, Col. 2 Tue., Dec. 16, 1913 Item from: COURT NEWS GRANTS DECREE IN KENNEDY DIVORCE Wife Alleges Husband Had Affinity in a Young Married Woman The divorce suit of May (Mary) H. Kennedy against John R. Kennedy, formerly widely known local jeweler, furnished the greatest interest in the court calendars called yesterday. Mrs. Kennedy was granted her decree, Kennedy failing to appear to defend the charges that he had been too much in the company of a young married woman, Mrs. Margaret Kelley. Attorneys Daley & Byrne appeared for Mrs. Kennedy. Only sufficient testimony was introduced by Mrs. Kennedy, through the statements of herself, son and a young woman in her employ, to show that Kennedy had been frequently in the company of the alleged co-respondent. Mrs. Kennedy told the court that her husband frequently took his alleged affinity to theaters and would hold her baby on his lap. She told of having surprised them once in Kennedy's jewelry store and finding Mrs. Kelley in a rear room. "She did not have her hat on and she did not put it on until after she got outside, either," declared Mrs. Kennedy. John R. Kennedy, Jr., the son, testified he served his father with the divorce papers one evening as he stepped off a train from Los Angeles with Mrs. Kennedy (Kelley). The Kennedys were married in 1882. The suit was filed a year ago. A property settlement was made after the action was started. Mrs. Kennedy conducts a hair dressing parlor.
According to the 1912 & 1913 CA. Voters registrations, Mary Helen Kennedy, a housewife, was living at 2812b Howard in San Francisco, CA. Living with her in 1913 was her son, John Kennedy, a moulder.

San Bernardino Daily Sun (San Bernardino, CA.), P.3, Col. 5 Sat., Jan. 18, 1913 ACTION FOR DIVORCE The action brought by Mrs. Mary H. Kennedy for divorce seems likely to go by default, for her attorneys, Daley & Byrne, filed a notice in the clerk's office yesterday to the effect that Kennedy has failed to appear and answer in the case, and asking that a default be entered. The case will therefore go to the default calendar.
