Marie married Gene Cain October 19, 1957; he preceded her in death April 26, 2001. Read More	Mary Louise "Marie" Hoferer Cain passed away Friday, July 12, 2013, at her home. She was born November 8, 1925, in Wamego, Kansas to Charles Francis and Helen Ada (Goodman) Hoferer. Marie married Gene Cain October 19, 1957; he preceded her in death April 26, 2001. Marie graduated from Wamego High School in 1943, St. Mary's College and St. Francis School of Nursing, where she was Class President in 1946; she was a member of the Army Nurses Cadet Corp. She graduated from St. John's Hospital School of Anesthesia in Springfield, IL in 1955, and the New Orleans School of Hypnotism for Anesthesia in 1979. Marie was a registered nurse, Surgery Supervisor and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. She worked as a Surgery Supervisor in Denver, Phoenix and St. Louis prior to graduating from Anesthesia School. Marie returned to Topeka as a Nurse Anesthetist at St. Francis and Stormont Vail Hospitals and was head of anesthesia at Santa Fe and Memorial Hospitals, retiring in 1987. She was the first Nurse Anesthetist to use hypnotism to help calm and relax patients prior to surgery. Marie was Vice-President of Pizza Hut of Kokomo which she co-founded with her husband in 1966; they were partners in several restaurant franchises, including Applebee's, Panera's and Sonic Drive Ins. Marie belonged to many charitable and professional organizations: St. Francis School of Nursing Alumni, American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, Vice-President and Treasurer of Kansas Association of Nurse Anesthetists, PEO, Holy Name Altar Guild, Our Lady of Fatima Circle, Mater Dei Holy Name Catholic Church and School, Hayden High School Board of Trustees, Topeka Public Library, Kansas State Historical Society, The Great Overland Station, The Marian Clinic, and Let's Help. She also supported the St. Lawrence Center, Topeka Civic Center, TPAC and PACE. Marie and Gene were part of a group of Potwin neighbors who donated the Wilson's Soda Fountain to Ward Meade Historical Society. Marie is survived by her sons, Chuck (Andria) Cain, The Woodlands , Texas; Mark Cain, Reno, Nevada; and daughter, Pam (Jay) Beckom, Kokomo, Indiana; and 12 grandchildren, Alix, Jackson and Olivia Cain; Raliegh, Taylor, Ian & Quinn Cain; Caroline, Laura, Katie & Claire Harbaugh, step-granddaughter, Monique (David) Haire and step-great-granddaughter, Eden Haire. She is also survived by her sister Patricia (John) Grill; sister-in-law, Susie Hoferer, and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She is preceded in death by brothers, Charles Melvin (Louise) Hoferer, Robert (Margaret) Hoferer and George "Fritz" Hoferer and sister, Margaret (Pat) Reilly. Family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at Mater Dei Holy Name Church, where a parish rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Church. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mater Dei Parish, sent in care of Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 SW Urish Road, Topeka KS 66614.
