The entire community was shocked when it became known last Saturday morning that Mrs. Lestus Kuhns was dead. The little twin son, Kenneth, died on Wednesday morning and the mother on Saturday morning. Mr. Kuhns, who had gone to the hospital with the little boy, took sick himself and has since been very ill in the hospital. Reports this morning (Monday) as to his condition are more encouraging, and it is possible that he may be able to be brought home to his motherless little children within a few days time. Mr. and Mrs. Kuhns had a family of ten children of whom the eldest, Wilma, is thirteen years old and the baby, Arlene, about two months, when the scarlet fever broke out in their home, and the mother and twin son have died within a week. The quarantine has made it very hard for those who would have been helping otherwise to care for this family. Mrs. Jacque and Mrs. Beeks of Monticello, and two trained nurses from Cedar Rapids are at this home caring for the sick, and just now there are three down with the disease. Relatives and neighbors are doing what they can to see that those under quarantine have the things needed to be supplied, and that the chores and care of the stock is being attended to. The funeral of the twin son, Kenneth, who was nearly four years of age, took place on Thursday in the cemetery at the Wayne Center church and was conducted by the pastor, Rev. Wlllms. Funeral services were held for Mrs. Kuhns in a like manner on Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Nellie (Henrichs) Kuhns was the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Henrichs, who used to occupy the farm upon which Mr. and Mrs. William B. Henrichs now live. She was born in this township and grew up to young womanhood here. She was united in marriage to Lestus Kuhns, the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. William Kuhns, and to this union were born ten children. No serious illnesses have ever before come to this family, and this is a very trying blow to the father and children as well as to their large circle of relatives and friends. It is hoped now that the progress of this disease is checked and that there will be no more loss of life in this already desolated home.
