| Description | : | Six generations from John Porter, who was born in Dorsetshire, England, in the year 1596, and emigrated to America in 1635. When McDonough county was divided into township organizations, Mr. Porter's sons gave the name to New Salem township, in honor of the town where they were brought up--New Salem, Massachusetts. Noah Porter died October 8, 1855, in this township, while on a visit to his sons. His remains were taken back to Wendell, Massachusetts, and laid to rest in the cemetery where four generations of his ancestors are sleeping side by side.
