Mrs. Kloss had been in rather poor health for several months, and such an ending had been expected, yet came as a shock to the family. Her trouble was of an appolectic [sic] and caused the family constant anxiety. Mrs. Kloss fell while walking in the garden, and passed away with no one to witness the end. She was found a few minutes later by her two daughters, lying face downward upon the ground, the spark of life had fled. It was a great shock to the daughters to find their mother lying dead in the garden. The body was borne to the house and the other members of the family summoned. "Lizzie Hauze, the daughter of Adam and Sarah Andrews [sic; Andreas] Hauze, was born on the 24th day of February 1854 at Mauch Chunk, Carbon county, Pennsylvania. She spent her girlhood days in the neighborhood where she was born. On the 21st day of June, 1873, she was married to Philip Kloss at Upper Lehigh, Pennsylvania. To this union nine children were born -- six girls and three boys, two of the girls preceded her to their Heavenly home, one in infancy, the other in young womanhood. The rest of her family is as follows: Mrs. Chas. A Conant, Harry Kloss, Mrs. Ross Toliver, Willie Kloss, Olive Kloss, Gladys Kloss and Albert B. Kloss, all live in this vicinity. With her husband she came to Greene county, Iowa, in the spring of 1876, settling in Dawson township, where she lived for a number of years, later moving to Paton in said county, where she resided for seven years. In the spring of 1896 (her husband having been appointed steward of the `County Home,') she removed to the `Home' in Bristol township, Greene county, where she performed the duties of matron in a manner highly satisfactory to all persons entrusted in that institution. At the end of which period she removed to Highland township where she since lived. In early life she united with the Presbyterian church, and lived a consistent Christian life from that time. She united with the Presbyterian church at Churdan March 5, 1905. For the last two or three years her health has been failing. She died at her home in Highland township, Greene county, Iowa, on Friday, August 13th, 1909. A faithful wife, a loving mother, a true friend has gone to her long home. She leaves to mourn her death, her husband, three sons, four daughters, her mother, two brothers, three sisters and a host of friends. "The funeral of Mrs. Kloss was held in the Presbyterian church in this city, Sunday morning at 10:00 o'clock, conducted by her pastor, Rev. M. C. Aleridge. The house of worship was filled with sorrowing friends who had come to pay their last tribute of respect to the departed one. The floral tribute was very beautiful. Rev. Aleridge's address was very appropriate, and he paid worthy tribute to the life and works of this noble and consecrated Christian woman. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother, and a kind friend and neighbor. A woman whom to know was to love and respect, for her kind words and good deeds. She was a devoted Christian woman and died as she had lived, true to her family, her friends and her God. Following the services at the church the remains were taken to the cemetery east of Paton and laid beside her daughter, who preceded her to the better land. The Reporter [block letters] joins with the host of friends in extending sincere sympathy to the heart broken husband and children. A bright and shining light has been taken from their home, but she has gone home to Heaven, there to await their coming." Card of Thanks: "We convey our heartfelt thanks to the neighbors and friends for their kindness and sympathy during the illness and at the death and burial of our beloved wife and mother. Phil Kloss and children." "This community was shocked Friday evening when the sad news spread over the wires that Mrs. Kloss was dead. The bereaved ones has the sympathy of the entire neighborhood. The funeral services were held in Churdan and the remains were laid to rest in the Paton cemetery." Burial took place at the Paton Cemetery, Paton, Greene County, Iowa on 15 August 1909.
