Read More	"I was born in Dawson Township Greene County, Iowa in the year 1879, June 14th. My parents came from Pennsylvania in 1876 where they had lived ever since. My father is of German descent, as my grandfather came from Germany when he was only eighteen years old. My mother is Dutch or Pennsylvania Dutch as they are more commonly called. "I cannot remember many incidents which occured before I was five years old. One that I still recall is when I was about four years old, and got lost. My father had gone to the field to work and I followed or tried to follow him. But, I lost sight of him and wandered down along the creek. My grandmother heard my cries and they soon found me. At the age of five I started to school. I never had liked my first teacher before and on the first day he made me read when I did not want to and I disliked him more than ever. He was blind in one eye and was abusive, very. The larger boys knew what to expect if they did not behave. "My next teacher I liked very well. We always had nice times while she taught, for she always seemed like one of the children herself. Some of the older scholars are now married, two of them now live in Paton and none of them now go to school at old Sunnyside. "I always went to Sunday School on Sunday. We had it in the school house and it seemed very queer to me the first time I was inside a church. The Sunday School had several picnics in my Uncle's grove. One of them was on the Fourth of July and I do not remember what occassions the others were on. I did not go away very often. I had come to Paton on the Fourth and several times I had been to the County Fair. "So the time passed on until I was nine years old when we moved from Dawson to Paton township only one mile from Paton. I did not like the country at all for the first few days and I wished I were back on the old place but I soon became used to it and like it far better than my former home. During the vacation in the spring the following year I went out to my cousins to stay and helped her a week as her little girl was sick. I had to read to her nearly all the time and I would get so hoarse. But I did not mind that very much as I was very fond of reading. Every year I made a week's visit to my Aunts who lived about nine miles from my home. "I attended school very regular until about three years ago when my father had typhoid fever and I was obliged to leave school. I did not get to go more than half of the time during the two years that followed. I have had about twelve different teachers, most of them being very good teachers. I never had but two teachers I did not like. "About a year and a half ago an uncle of mine came from Pennsylvania and gave us a short visit. I was very sorry when he went home and would gladly have gone home with him as he wished me to do, if my parents had been willing. It has been my wish to go to Pennsylvania ever since I have been able to realize anything about it. Nearly all of my relations live there and I think I should like to visit them. "[In] the spring of 1894 I was sick most of the time having over worked myself during the winter. I have read a good deal during my life as I was very fond of reading. Last fall I started to school in Paton where I will attend school till the end of the term." In a notebook belonging to Sarah, there was a story about the celebration of the 4th of July in 1893: "My celebration of the Fourth of July took place at Paton July 4, 1893. The weather was nice except that there was a heavy rain the night before but the sun shone brightly all day. I went with my folks as it was only a mile from home. Preparations had been made for weeks before. We started real early and we stopped at Mrs. Algers to wait for the girls as sixteen of us were to be in a flag drill. We were obliged to go to the Opera House every other day and often every day to practice for the drill. It was about nine o'clock when we went to the school house. The girls that were to represent the states and ourselves were to meet there so as to be ready for the parade and the drill also had to wait there. The parade was to have been at ten o'clock but on account of the roads being so muddy it was prolonged until eleven. After marching through and around the square we marched up to the speakers stand which was on the northern part of the town. The choir sang several songs. We had our drill. The Declaration of Independence was read by Jessie Harris and P.A. Smith of Scranton was the speaker. After the programme we had our dinner down by the Presbyterian Church as we had taken it with us. "There were many poeple came in the afternoon as it had been so muddy in the forenoon. I do not remember anything except a handkerchief. There were several races but the men and boys crowded up around them so that no one else had any chance of seeing anything. "About five o'clock I went home with Birchie and stayed until dark. She milked the cow and I kept the flies off. Then we played croquet for about an hour and after eating our supper we went back up town again. Birchie disobeyed her mother in regard to dancing and so we did not spend a very pleasant evening. we watched what few fire works that there were and went down to the Dr. Woodys to get some things that we had left there. I had to go up town again and to wait for Papa to get the team, and then we went home. I felt very cross and tired as the day had been so warm and everything did not go just as I had wished. When we reached home the horses had broken down the gates and were gone as the boys did not fasten them very well in their desire to be back again. "It was very late when I got to bed that evening and I had to get up early the next morning to go and [get] gooseberries. In all I thought I had a very good time even if it did make me tired and cross for several days. I did not think I would want to go any place for years." Sarah Mahalie Kloss received her teacher's certificate in July 1896 and was teaching school in Kendrick Twp, Greene Co., IA when she became ill and died after teaching less than a month. Her tombstone is inscribed "17 Sept 1896, Typhoid", at Paton Cemetery. Sarah Mahalie Kloss is listed in family medical records as having died of typhoid.
