Rebecca Lillian Conant, oldest child of Phillip Kloss and Elizabeth Kloss, was born in Upper Lehigh, Pennsylvania, June 11, 1874, and departed this life at her home in Churdan March 14, 1934, at the age of 50 years 9 months and 3 days. During the past eight months she has been confined to her home with heart trouble. A constant but uncomplaining sufferer. When she was two years of age her parents moved to Greene county, Iowa, where they located on a farm in Dawson township. Later they moved to a farm in Paton township, where they resided until the spring of 1897, when they moved to a farm near Farlin, where she lived until her marriage. In the meantime she taught in the public schools for a period of seven years. On March 25, 1899, she was united in marriage to Charles A. Conant. To this union three children were born: Mildred Faye, who died at the age of eight months, Clyde Everett, and Marion Elizabeth, now Mrs. Harold Curtis of Churdan. After they were married they spent five happy years together farming near the following places: Minburn, Farlin, and Churdan. In 1904 they moved to Churdan where she resided the remainder of her life with the exception of two years which were spent in Utah. On March 10, 1905 she was baptized and united with the First Baptist church of Churdan where she was a faithful and loyal member until her death. Here she served her Master in the capacity of Sunday school teacher, president of the ladies aid society and church treasurer. A faithful and regular attendant until failing health prevented. She was also a member of the Bethuel Rebekah lodge of Churdan, in which she held the office of Past Noble Grand. Her parents, two sisters, Adelia and Sara, and an infant daughter, Mildred Faye, preceded her in death. Those remaining are: Her faithful companion, son, Clyde and daughter Marian, and son-in-law Harold Curtis, and one granddaughter, Marjorie Lee Curtis, all of Churdan; also six brothers and sisters, Harry Kloss and Mrs. Nellie Tolliver of Churdan, William L. and Albert C. Kloss of Jefferson, Mrs. Olive Farley of Lanesboro, and Mrs. Gladys Hagenbaugh of Wanamie, Pa., besides a large number of nieces and nephews and other relatives, and a host of friends. To her life was just a journey along a rugged path bordered on either side by the beautiful. Her faith in God was exemplified daily in her perfect trust in Him. Nothing was ever too small for her to enjoy, and nothing was so unsightly but that she saw in it something of beauty. As a wife and mother, she built a home and there reigned with the law of supreme love. Patient, loving, kind and devoted, enjoying each little home-like pleasure to the fullest and inspiring her family and friends to walk in a more perfect way. The church has lost a saint. The Rebekahs have lost a true sister. The community has lost one of those rare, priceless characters upon which the highest type of society is built. The funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Baptist church in charge of her pastor, Rev. Roy C. Longfellow. The pall bearers were Dr. O.C. Lohr, E.C. Harriett, Alta Flack, George Anderson, Chauncey Stream and C.F. West. The ladies quartet, Mesdames M.E. Blazer, H.W. Reading, Alta Flack and Niles Wittfoth sang “In the Sweet Bye and Bye,” “We’ll Never Say Goodbye in Heaven” and “That Beautiful Land,” accompanied by Miss Helen Ferguson. The Rebekah lodge also had a short service at the church. The burial was made in Churdan cemetery.
