Read More	Levi Henry McFarland, for more than 80 years a resident of Mills County, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. H. H. Piburn, Sunday afternoon following a brief illness. Mr. McFarland, better known to his old time friends as "Pete" was one of the sturdy pioneers who helped to build up and make this into a well titled section of the country. He is one of the last of the old stock of early setters, the McFarland, the Judahs, the Dolphs, the Wortmans on the east side of the Nishna river and the Hamakers, the Summers, the Weavers, the Raines on the west side, who settled in the country in the early fifties when all this country was new and the old White Cloud mill and the town of White Cloud formed a community center. Mr. McFarland and two brothers still living in other sections but the older stock of the other families is all gone. Mr. McFarland was one of the rugged, honest characters posed of thrift and business capacity that enabled him to prosper even in hardest times and yet took no advantage of his neighbor or friend. Funeral services were held in the Piburn home southeast of Malvern Tuesday afternoon conducted by Rev. J. A. Countingham of the Methodist Church. Burial in the Malvern Cemetery. Music was furnished by Mrs. Frank Steele, Mrs. Frank Johnson, S. M. Criswell, and Perry Bayes with Mrs. Chas Gipe accompanist. Mrs. Steel sand a solo, "The End of a Perfect Day." Pall bearers were Marion McFarland, Harry Piburn, George Schuir, Ed Piburn, Vernon Hanmock, Virgil Hanmock, grandsons, and great-grandsons of the deceased. Levi Henry McFarland, son of Alexander McFarland and Delilah Judah, was born in Buchanan County, Missouri, near St. Joe, May 20, 1945 and departed this life at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E. H. Piburn July 29, 1934, at the age of 89 years, 2 months, and 9 days. His father, a soldier in the Mexican War, died while in the service, when the lad was four years old, and he made his home with his Grandmother Judah, coming to Iowa at that time. When he was 17 years old, he crossed the plains with an ox team, returning in about two years. His greatest delight was to tell his grandchildren and great grandchildren his experiences. On July 23, 1871 he was married to Christenia Addy and to them were born four children, Anne Piburn of White Cloud, Mry Kelley of Hastings, Henry McFarland of Shenandoah, and Isaac who departed this life with the mother 17 years ago. He was in his usual health until 10 days ago when he was taken ill with heat prostration and his advanced age being against him, he passéd away, just falling asleep on the afternoon of Sunday, July 29. He and his good wife lived on the Josiah Wearin farm where all the children were born and accumulated enough to buy the old home farm just south of White Cloud to which he had added by hard work and saving considerable more of Mills County's choices land. His only thoughts were to save for his children when he was gone. He and his wife united with the Baptist Church in Malvern 55 years ago and was baptized by Rev. Conger. Besides his immediate family, he is survived by two brothers, M. E. of Linville, W. A. of Albia, Nebraska, one half sister, Laura Hummel of White Cloud, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Friends from a distance attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Jay Ogden of Albion, Nebraska, Fred McFarland, Mrs. Marie Aistrope of Omaha, Nebraska, Mrs. Rotus Addy and children of Imogene, Mr. and Mrs. Allen Black, Howard King, and Mrs. George Spaulding of Shenandoah.
