Martin Irvin McFarland, eldest son of Delilah Ann Judah and Alexander McFarland, was born in Buchanan County, Missouri, July 20, 1845, and departed this life at his home south of Lynnville, January 8, 1936, aged 90 years, five months, and 18 days. His father, an ex-soldier of the Mexican war, died when Mr. McFarland was a little past seven years of age. After his father's death, his mother with her four small sons moved to Iowa locating in Mills County where he spent the greater part of his life. He was married September 10, 1874 in Glenwood to Martha Ann Shoop. It is interesting to note here that for their wedding trip they went to Mills County Fair at Malvern which was then holding its first annual exhibit. To them were born eight children, five of whom are living, Lenore, John H., James E., with whom he lived until his death, Mrs. Wood Vestal and Mrs. Frank Crouse of Strahan. He was preceded in death by two infant sons, and his youngest daughter, Mrs. Pearl Nordin, who died in 1921, and two brothers, L. H. McFarland and L. S. McFarland, and a half brother, J. W. Hummel. They made their home in Mills County until 1916 when they moved to Wisconsin locating on a farm near Ladysmith, where they resided until they moved to their present home in 1932. Besides his aged wife and five children, he is survived by four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; one brother, W. A. McFarland, of Albion, Nebraska; one half sister, Laura Hummell, near Malvern; and other relatives and a host of old time friends who will long remember his friendly helpfulness and many neighborly acts of kindness. When the Civil War came on he tried to enlist in the Union Army, but the recruiting officer, Milton Summers, refused to take him on account of his youth, without his mother's consent. During the time of the Civil War, he crossed the plains to Denver twice, helping drive the oxen and mule teams, carrying flour and bacon to the soldiers of the northwest. In his younger days, he was converted and joined the United Brethren Church. Last September Mr. and Mrs. McFarland celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary.
