Description	:	Verjean "Jean" Ann May, age 86, passed away on February 10, 2022. A character with a lot of character, Jean was beloved by family, friends, and neighbors. She was famously unfiltered and turned many an interesting phrase, some even repeatable! She was famously unfiltered and turned many an interesting phrase, some even repeatable! Born in Council Bluffs on August 31, 1935 to Lloyd and Edna (Mann) Hollins who preceded her in death, Jean was a lifelong resident of the area. She was a second child, sandwiched between her cherished sisters Leda and Deaun. In 1951 Jean met the love of her life, Robert "Bob" Eugene May, Sr. Introduced by Bob's brother Dick and his girlfriend and future wife Ruth Swanger, Bob and Jean married on August 16, 1953. Taller than the average girl of her day with long brunette hair framing an angelic face, Jean was what guys then would call a real doll. Their happy union produced four sons. Though denied the daughter she wanted, the special 'gift' of four boys guaranteed her a for-sure ticket to sainthood. And to balance the scales somewhat, she was blessed with three daughter-in-laws, five granddaughters, and three great-granddaughters. Full of old-timey knowledge and skills like sewing, gardening, and canning, Jean (and Bob) loved having grandkids, nephews, and nieces visit them in the country to join in the fun. Accomplishments revolved around family. She was determined to see her kids graduate from high school, which they did. She was equally determined to celebrate her 50th wedding anniversary. Jean and Bob were married 57 years before his death August 17, 2010. The last big thing for her was being able to live out her life in her own home, which she was able to do except for a short stay in the hospital at the very end of her life. The accomplishments don't end there. She was also an expert at smoking cessation…something she did dozens of times! Those surviving Jean: sons Bob (Patti) May of Council Bluffs; David (Elaine) May of Fort Collins, Colorado; Paul (Lois) May of McClelland, Iowa; and Roger May of Council Bluffs. She also leaves grandchildren Richard Blaine May of Council Bluffs; Brittany (Daniel) Mendoza of Council Bluffs; Rebecca May of Fort Collins, Colorado; Brett May of Council Bluffs; Taylar Sears of Bellevue NE; Brandyn May (fiancée Colin Johanek) of Council Bluffs; and Abigail May of McClelland. And she is survived by seven great-grandchildren. Jean is also survived by sisters Leda Sears and Deaun Hansen, and brother-in-law Richard "Dick" May and wife Ruth, all of Council Bluffs. Left behind also is her loyal dog Dallas. The close family is having graveside service on February 14th 1:00 p.m. in Memorial Park Cemetery and will hold a Celebration of Life at a future date. The family would be grateful that any memorial contributions to honor Jean be directed to Underwood Dollars for Scholars (underwood.dollarsforscholars.org/), Underwood Optimists Club college scholarship fund, or the Lewis Township Volunteer Fire Department Rescue Fund.
