(#47825759) ****************** Glasco Sun, Friday, March 24, 1905, page 3: Death of An Old Settler William Jordan was born on the 30th day of December, 1822, in Kings County, Nova Scotia, and died at his home three and one held miles north-east of Glasco, Kansas, on the 17th day of March, 1905, aged 82 years, 2 months and 17 days. His departure is mourned by a large circle of near relatives, and the entire community of Glasco. In early life he untied with the Baptist church at his native place, showing his faith in Christ and his love for Gods people. The early teachings of the church and home never departed from him and the same faithful trust in the Bible and the Savior enabled him to live right in the sight of men, and humble before God. On the 15th day of June 1846 he was untied in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Ward** in Nova Scotia, with whom he lived a happy and eventful life until death separated them. The coming of years only made him the more tender and devoted toward her who shared with him the duties of the home -- its trials and joys that intermingle so strangely in the common experiences of all earthly habitants. Especially was he sympathizing and helpful toward her present almost helpless condition occasioned by paralysis, and only ended his labor of love when prostrated by sickness. To this union were born ten children, three sons and seven daughters; two of the daughters died before the family removed from Nova Scotia. The surviving children were all present at the funeral except Mrs. Celestia Martin who lives in Lane County, Kansas. Of the deceased father's family there are yet three remaining, viz., Mrs. Eunice Colwell, mother of Geo. and William Colwell, of Glasco, and who yet resides in her native place at the advanced age of 86 years; the other sister, Mrs. Mary Fuller, lives in Boston, Mass., and is five years older than the deceased; also a brother who lives in Nova Scotia who is seventy-seven years old. This family of Scotch-Irish descent is remarkable for long life and upright character. The surviving children all live in Cloud County except Mrs. Martin. Twenty-three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren survive this aged patriarch. The aged wife mourns the passing of her noble husband and is patiently waiting the will of the heavenly father to remain in the body, or to go, as it pleases him. The Deceased was a good neighbor, a kind husband and father and many rise up and bless his memory. He was not a member of any church after coming to Kansas, but continued a true believer in Christ. He was well known in the Solomon Valley, having lived here since 1871. His life was above reproach, as the people all know. Mistakes he may have made, but they were not of the heart, for that inclined to the right. he was born under a different flag from ours, but loved that of his adopted country. His last days were spent at home on the farm where he settled first so long ago. He was a liberal contributor to all worthy objects and gave to the different churches when erecting places of worship. He was very hospitable and never turned any away from his door who sought food or shelter. By industry and honesty he secured several farms and has left the dependent widow and children in good circumstances. The funeral took place on last Sunday, the 19th. The services were conducted at the house and at the Presbyterian church by Elder B.F. McMillan, assisted by Elder J.W. Ball. The large attendance gave evidence of the high esteem in which he was held. His remains were laid to rest in the beautiful cemetery of Glasco, waiting the Spring-time of the resurrection day. Thanks of the relatives are extended to all who helped with heart or hand in the sickness, and the final bereavement.
