Read More	The following provided by Find A Grave contributor "Cara": The River Press, Fort Benton, Mont., 8 Sept 1954 Mrs. John Harris, Sr., City's Last Pioneer, Died Thursday Fort Benton's only remaining member of the Society of Montana Pioneers, Mrs. John Harris, Sr., passed away early last Thursday morning, Sept. 2, at St. Clare hospital in this city. While she had been in poor health for some years, her condition did not become critical until a few days before her passing. Of her life span of 87 years, Mrs. Harris spent 74 years in Chouteau county and Fort Benton. Funeral services for Fort Benton's revered matron were held Saturday afternoon at St. Paul's church. Pallbearers were members of early day Fort Benton and Highwood families. Born at Alder Gulch on May 14, 1867, Mrs. Harris and her twin sister, Annie, were brought to Fort Benton by stagecoach when six months old by their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Berry. They boarded a late fall steamboat with Mexico, Missouri, as their destination. Departure from this port was delayed by the drowning of Governor Thomas Meagher here. At Cow Island, about 170 miles downstream, the boat sank and passengers made camp on the south side of the river. A few buffalo robes and blankets had been salvaged from the wreck. Crude mackinaw boats were constructed and the journey continued to Bismarck. From that city passage was obtained to Mexico. In the spring of 1880 Mrs. Harris returned to Montana with her mother, then widowed, and two sisters, taking passage on the Red Cloud. They moved to the Highwood area where her mother's brother, Charles W. Price, had located a relinquishment which they bought. The mother had brought up river a team of horses and a cow, also some equipment with which to start ranching, that she might support her family. There were then practically no residents on Highwood creek, only near neighbors being James Arnoux and John Harris. Mr. and Mrs. Harris were married in 1885 at her Highwood home. Mr. Harris died in 1932. Mrs. Harris retained the land on Highwood creek originally owned by her mother and while she and Mr. Harris spent winters in Fort Benton, she retained the ranch home as a summer home, although for the past years she was not able to enjoy it. Surviving are three daughters and three sons: Mrs. Nell H. Patterson, Whittier, Calif.; Mrs. James Wilson, Jr., Escondido, Calif.; and Mrs. John T. Phelan, Fort Benton; Howell of Highwood, and Ed and John of Fort Benton. One daughter, Barbara Harris Clarke preceded her mother in death. Eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren survive. Both sisters, Mrs. Summers, the twin, and Mrs. James Townsend, youngest of the family, died some years ago. Mrs. Harris was a world citizen, interested in the day's news and posted on current events. In spite of frailty of her body, she remained alert and friends enjoyed visits to her bedside because of her friendliness and interest. She was a lifelong member of the Episcopal church and while not identified with many organizations, contributed to and aided worthwhile causes.
