Harris, Native of Fort Benton, Passes Tuesday Edward William Harris, 62, resident of Fort Benton and Chouteau county his entire life, died Tuesday afternoon in a Great Falls hospital, where he had been a patient since July 22nd. Mr. Harris was born here March 21, 1900, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Harris, pioneers of Montana and Chouteau county. He was raised here and graduated from the local high school with the class of 1918 and was a World War I veteran. He was connected with the Chouteau County Bank for a number of years, and was cashier and manager of the bank for some time. He was appointed county assessor in Jan. 1945, and has since served in that office, being elected in 1946, 1954 and 1958 without opposition, and was again nominated in the election this past June, without opposition on either ticket. His father, John Harris, came west in 1858 by ox team, and was at Bannack and Virginia City at the time of the gold strikes. In 1872 he moved to Fort Benton and later went into the cattle business at Highwood, as well as managing the Circle Cattle Co. The mother was born in Alder Gulch in 1867, moved to Fort Benton from Missouri in 1880 and married Mr. Harris at Highwood in 1885. The father died in 1932 and the mother in 1954. In his lifetime of residence in this section, Ed Harris became known to virtually all county residents. Of a genial, cheerful disposition, he made friends of his many acquaintances and they will learn with sorrow of his passing. He married Irma M. Campbell in Helena on April 14, 1945, and she survives him. Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Mary Jo Walker, Mountain Lake, N. J., as well as two step-children, Arnold Campbell, Bozeman, and Mrs. James Hotvedt of Wolf Point; a brother, Howell Harris of Highwood; and three sisters, Mrs. Ann Phelan, Fort Benton; Mrs. Nell Patterson, LaJolla, Calif.; and Mrs. Mary Wilson, Escondido, Calif. Funeral services will be held from the Benton Funeral Home chapel at 2 o'clock on Friday afternoon. The military service will be conducted at the graveside and burial will be in the family plot in Riverside cemetery.
