Read More	The following provided by Find A Grave contributor "Cara": The River Press, Fort Benton, Mont., 13 Sept 1972 Howell Harris, Fort Benton Native, Passes On Thursday; Parents Were Montana Pioneers Howell Harris, 77, native of Fort Benton and resident of Chouteau county all his life, died Thursday morning, Sept. 7, 1972, in a Great Falls hospital, after suffering a stroke. He had been in failing health for several years. Mr. Harris was born Feb. 23, 1895, in Fort Benton. His parents were members of the Society of Montana Pioneers. John Harris, and brother Howell for whom he was named, came across the plains with their mother in 1853 to Salt Lake City, in June 1863 to Bannack. The father came to Chouteau county in 1873 with cattle to ranch on Upper Highwood, the start of business Howell was in until his death. The mother, Addie Berry, married John Harris in Fort Benton in 1885. She was born in Virginia City. In the early 1880s the father and uncle became associated with the Conrad-Circle Cattle Co. and were prominent in management of the Circle American and Canadian business for many years. Howell Harris grew up in the Highwood section, attended Fort Benton schools and graduated from Eastman Business College, Poughkeepsie, New York. He served in France in World War I with the 362nd infantry of the 91st division, a regiment nearly wiped out at Gesnes in the Argonne and has been president of the "Remnants Club" of survivors. He married Helen Zimmer of Augusta, Dec. 28, 1920. He began operation of the family ranch about that time, in 1946 purchased interests of other stockholders. He was president of the company at his death, although he had retired four years ago. Howell Harris served on the state liquor control board, on the Montana Stockgrowers advisory board and as president of the Montana Cowboys Association. He was a member of the Sons and Daughters of Montana Pioneers, VFW and American Legion, Benton Lodge No. 25, AF&AM, and Great Falls Elks. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Marjorie Gray of Highwood; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was the last of seven children of Mr. and Mrs. John Harris, Sr.; John and Ed Harris, Mrs. Ann Phelan, Mrs. Mary Wilson, Mrs. Nell Patterson and Mrs. Barbara Clarke preceded him in death.
