Kohler, 44, well known local sportsman and service station operator, was killed instantly last Wednesday in a tragic two-car accident which claimed two other lives and seriously injured four. The accident occurred at 5:15 p.m. a mile and a quarter east of Carrollton on Route 43. Kohler was alone in the car and was on his way to his home in Kilgore when the accident occurred. Also killed instantly was Rev. Floyd Gale, 63, of Jacksontown, Ohio, near Newark, driver of the other car. His wife, Helen Gale, 62, died in an ambulance on the way to the hospital. A daughter of the Gales, Mrs. Ruth Russell, 41, Rt. 2, Zanesville, and three of her daughters, Judy 15, Sarah 19 and Martha 10 were critically injured and were rushed to Mercy Hospital in the Allmon and Sweeney ambulances. Hospital attaches reported on Wednesday morning that Judy remains on the danger list with fractures of both thighs, a fractured skull and severe face lacerations. Sarah remains on the critical list with severe head lacerations, concussion and a fractured thigh. Mrs. Russell is reported in fair condition with a fractured upper left arm while her youngest daughter, Martha, is reported in good condition with a dislocated hip. State Patrolman George Litt, Sheriff Richard Beamer, Deputies Howard Seith and Moyne Smith were on the scene a short time after the accident and aided in removing the injured and dead. The door of the Gale machine had to be pried open to remove Mr. Gale's body. The body of Mr. Kohler was thrown under the left front wheel of the Gale car and a wrecker had to be summoned. Officers who investigated are still in doubt as to the exact cause of the accident. However, it has been determined that the Kohler car was out of control and was skidding sideways at the time of the impact. Rev. Gale was pastor of three churches in and near Jacksontown. The Gales, Mrs. Russell and her children were traveling north on 43, on their way to Salem where they were to participate in a family Thanksgiving reunion at the residence of anther daughter of the Gales, Mrs. Clarence Hartsough. A native of Kilgore, Allen Kohler was born February 11, 1911, the son of the late Albert and Amelia (Arnold) Kohler. He was graduated from Amsterdam High School in 1930 and had operated Kohler's Service Station in Carrollton for the past ten years. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Buckeye State Sheriff's Association. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Alice (Lyle) Kohler; four sons, James, David and Billy, all at home, and Allen Jr. of Camp Irwin, California; five sisters, Mrs. Velma Gotschall, Mrs. Gotta Cline, Mrs. Mervin McLaughlin and Mrs. Willis Long, all of Carrollton, and Mrs. Rex Stevens of Columbus, and a brother, Herman Kohler of Carrollton. Services were held Saturday in Sweeney Funeral Home with Rev. R. W. Shepherd officiating. Burial was in Kilgore Cemetery.
