Andrew was listed as a farmer age 29 born in Ohio, his wife Mary housekeeper age 28 born in Ohio, their children listed were, Margaret B. age 1 and Helen G. age 2 month, both born in Ohio. He was listed as widowed age 59 born June 1840 in Ohio, his children listed were; Helen age 30 born April 1870, William H. age 25 born July 1874, Mary E. age 23 born October 1876, Monie M. age 21 born February 1879 and Carrie L. age 19 born February 1881, all were born in Ohio. Andrew served in the Union Army during the Civil War. Andrew's obituary in the Carroll Chronicle, Carrollton, Ohio, Friday, May 5, 1922. Andrew Phillips died rather suddenly last Saturday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Lewis Slates of Kilgore. Mr. Phillips was born on June 24, 1840, in Loudon Township, as were his parents. His great-grandparents came from Maryland in 1807, and took up land in Loudon Township when it was a wilderness. At the age of 21 the deceased enlisted in Company D, 80th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, serving through most of the Civil War. He fought in 15 hard battles, among them Iuka, Corinth, Mission Ridge, Lookout Mountain, Perrysville, Vicksburg and Atlanta. He was with Sherman "From Atlanta to the sea." He participated in the review at Washington and was mustered out at Little Rock, on August 13, 1865, serving almost four years. Mr. Phillips was a charter member of James M. Scott Post G. A. R., serving one year as commander of same. When Scott post ceased to exist he transferred to the Harlem Springs Post. On December 5, 1867, he married Mary Seaton, who died January 27, 1893. Six daughters and one son were born to them, all of whom survive. Deceased was a devoted member of the Kilgore M. E. Church nearly all his life. He was a pious, Quiet, unassuming Christian and is mourned by a host of friends. The surviving children are; Mrs. George Smith, of Kilgore; Helen at home; Mrs. George Parks of Rocky River; Howard Phillips of Youngstown; Mrs. Mary Smith of Cleveland; Mrs. Clyde Scott of Harlem Springs and Mrs. Lewis Slates of Kilgore. His obituary in the Free Press Standard, Carrollton, Ohio, Thursday, May 4, 1922. Andrew Phillips was born June 24, 1840, and was the son of William and Mary (Simmons) Phillips, who were natives of Loudon Township. Mr. Phillips great-grandparents came from Maryland in 1807 and took up government land in Loudon Township when it was a wilderness. His parents started out in wedded life on the present, homestead about 1828 and reclaimed a productive farm where they resided the remainder of their lives. Andrew Phillips when 21 years of age heard the call of his country when the Union was in danger, and December 5, 1861, enlisted in Company D, 8oth Regiment, and served valiantly in this connection during nearly the whole of the Civil War. He fought with his company in 15 hard battles, among them Iuka, Corinth, Mission Ridge, Lookout Mountain, Perrysville, Jackson, Vicksburg and Atlanta. He marched with Serman to the Sea and was still in hard service when Lee surrendered to Grant, whose centenary was celebrated the day of Mr. Phillips' death. He participated in the grand review at the nation's capital and was mustered out at Little Rock, Arkansas, August 13, 1865, making almost four years of continuous service on behalf of his country. He never lost interest in his comrades, whom he dearly loved and respected. He was a charter member of James M. Scott Post, G. A. R., serving one year as its commander. When Scott Post ceased to exist he transferred his membership and allegiance to Harlem Springs Post, of which he was a member at his death. At the close of the war Mr. Phillips resumed his occupation on the home farm, where he labored hard till a few years before his demise. December 5, 1867, he was united in marriage to Mary Seaton, daughter of Samuel and Nancy (Jackman) Seaton. Mrs. Phillips was a devoted wife and mother of six daughters and one son, all of whom are living. She was summoned to eternal rest January 27, 1893. There are 15 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren of the deceased. Mr. Phillips was a devoted member of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Kilgore nearly the whole of his life. He was a pious, quiet, unassuming Christian. He made little display of a religious zeal and faith, but was _arless in defense of his course and had little patience with anything which savored of higher criticism, loving rather and clinging to the faith of our fathers. Mr. Phillips passed away rather suddenly April 27, 1922. He had labored hard to make Loudon Township a better place, and God took him to eternal rest. He left a living heritage industry, of faith in God, of loyalty and country and home and of godly pa___ce, for friends, neighbors and his ____ved children, who are proud of his _____nd paternal examples.
