Tipton Advertiser Friday 24 Feb 1913, page 1 COUNTY'S OLDEST SETTLER PASSES TO REWARD Charles Crawford, who in recent years had the distinction of being the oldest settler in Cedar County, died last Friday at his home southwest of Tipton, aged 77 years. Funeral services were held at the late home Monday afternoon with interment in the Whitmer cemetery. He was born near Ft. Wayne, Indiana, April 11, 1836, his parents being Andrew and Maria Crawford and was brought by them to this county in June of the same year. His parents were among the first of the pioneers who settled this county and had a prominent part in its early history. Land in this county was not placed on sale by the government until 1841 and Andrew Crawford bargained with the Indians for the first place he settled which was in Sugar Creek township. It is claimed that he was the first settler in the county. He lived on the Sugar Creek farm until his death in 1857. A number of the pioneer relics to be found in the museum of the State university were contributed by the Crawford family. The deceased was a farmer all his life, and his home for the past thirteen years was on the farm where he died. In 1858 Mr. Crawford married Miss Phoebe Whitmer, who came to this state with her parents in 1848. She died Nov. 8, 1884. The Cedar County History says: "Of the children born to Mr. and Mrs. Crawford, George is now a resident of Woodbury county, Iowa; Frances is the wife of Mr. George A. Momaw of Seattle; Douglas died when young; William who was a school teacher is also deceased; John, a teacher and attorney, went to Oklahoma when the strip was opened and was drowned there in the Vertigres river; Catharine is now the wife of Marion Campell of Sewal, Ia.; Lucy is the wife of Frank Kensinger; Peter is at home with his father; Lillie is deceased; Laura is the wife of Arthur Smith living in Minnesota; Charles is deceased and Mary completes the family. Mr. Crawford was long an honored member of the Cedar County Old Settlers association and never failed to attend its meetings. No one was better qualified to speak with authority of the incidents of pioneer days in the county and he was frequently called to speak before the society.
