OBITRUARY: The Republican Newspaper (Oakland, Maryland), Thursday, November 29,1951 – Page 1 (Transcribed by Ronn E. Friend) CAPT. CHARLES E. HOYE IS FATALLY INJURED WHEN STUCK BY CAR Capt. Charles E. Hoye, 75, well-known authority on Garrett county history, was fatally injured November 20, in Los Angeles, Calif., when he was struck by an automobile as he was attempting to cross a street in that city. First taken to a receiving hospital and later to the General hospital in that city, he died the following day, November 21. Mr. Hoye suffered a badly mangled leg and a fractured skull. Death came to him a month after he had observed his 75th birthday. A native of Sang Run. he was a son of the late William E. Hoye and Louise (Stutzman) Hoye, and was born at Sang Run, October 21, 1976. His grandfather, William W. Hoye, was one of the first settlers of this county, coming to Sang Run in 1799. After graduating from Maryland State Normal School (now Towson State Teachers' College) he taught school in the state. He was married to Miss Hallie G. Savage, of Sang Run, and to this marriage three children were born. He became a soldier of the U.S. Army during the Spanish American War in 1898, serving in the 3rd Cavalry, and in 1899 he enlisted with the U.S. Volunteers and served in the Philippine Islands during the insurrection there. He remained in the Islands with the Department of Education and was serving as provincial superintendent of schools when he retired in 1925. He also served with the 7th Regiment, Philippine Guard, during World War I with the rank of captain and adjutant. Following the death of his first wife, he married Miss Luella K. Mason, of California, and for the past several years he had spent his time between California and Garrett County. He helped organize the Garrett County Historical Society in 1941, served as its president for a number of years, and as editor of the Glades Star, quarterly publication of the society. He contributed many historical articles for this publication and continued his research in Garrett county history and their pioneer families. Mr. Hoye was author of the book, "The Hoyes of Maryland," and had been engaged in compiling the histories of several other pioneer families of this section. Mr. Hoye left Garrett county last December after remaining for the dedication of the Ruth Enlow Library, a project in which he was deeply interested, and for which he contributed $1,000. Mr. Hoye also was instrumental in arousing interest in a Centennial celebration in 1949 which culminated in program of much historical value. Funeral services for Mr. Hoye were conducted last Saturday, November 24, in Los Angeles, after which the body was cremated. Final rites were in charge of a Masonic lodge in Los Angeles. His ashes are being sent to Sang Run for burial. Surviving are his widow, who resides at 4615 West 18th Street, Los Angeles; two sons, William R. of Arizona; and Edward B. of near San Diego, Calif; and a daughter, Miss Carlotta Hoye of Los Angeles. While residing in this county in parts of recent years Mr. Hoye had lived at Sang Run with relatives, at the home of Mrs. Mary C. Hoye and her daughter, Miss Ruth Hoye. NOTE 1: Mrs. Mary C. Hoye referred to above was the wife of Elijah Hoye, an uncle to Capt. Hoye; she was the daughter of Amos Wesley Friend (1835-1912) and Lovenia E. Johnson Friend (1839-1926) and a sister to Smith McClelland Friend of Sang Run. NOTE 2: Miss Ruth Hoye referred to above assisted Capt. Hoye with his research and many of his historical undertakings.
