Description	:	Clyde Paul Schillinger, 87, was called for his last big audit peacefully on the morning of Nov. 30, 2006. Clyde was staying with his daughter, Carol, in Colstrip. Clyde was born April 10, 1917, in Wolf Point, to Paul Jr., and Ina (McFarland) Schillinger and was raised on the family homestead farm in Vida. Clyde was staying with his daughter, Carol, in Colstrip. Clyde was born April 10, 1917, in Wolf Point, to Paul Jr., and Ina (McFarland) Schillinger and was raised on the family homestead farm in Vida. Clyde attended high school in Wolf Point where it was necessary to board away from home. In the winter, on their infrequent trips home, they would travel by sleigh and cross the ice on the Missouri. Describing those trips as very cold, they were not enjoyable. Graduating from Wolf Point in 1935, Clyde's favorite sport was baseball. He played on the Vida team from 1934 to 1937. Through the years, he would always engage someone in a game of catch. In 1936, Clyde and his sister traveled to Billings to start their post-secondary education; he enrolled in Billings Business College graduating with an accounting certificate in 1938. This was the start of a life-long work he loved equaled only by his love for farming. Clyde returned to the family farm in the summers to help harvest the crops and play baseball. Upon graduating from Billings Business College, he went to work for Kuilmans Oil Company in Miles City as their accountant. He was then hired by Farmers Union as an accounting trouble shooter out of St. Paul, Minn. He traveled throughout the mid-west wherever a sharp-minded accountant was needed. It was on one of his trips to Sioux Falls, S.D., while driving by a Dodge dealership that a red 1941 Plymouth convertible caught his eye. After much haggling with the salesman, Clyde purchased the car. The salesman had taken a liking to this young man and invited Clyde to Sunday dinner. Clyde was introduced to Monica Rogers, the salesman's sister who was to become the love of Clyde's life. That Sunday was Dec. 7, 1941. Clyde entered the U.S. Navy on March 27, 1942, serving at the U.S. Naval Hospital Balboa in San Diego, and while serving there, he was united in marriage to Monica on March 24, 1943. After serving in the Pacific, he was discharged in November of 1945 as a Pharmacist's Mate First Class. Clyde and Monica started their family in 1945 with the birth of their first son, Leon, followed by Dean, Carol and Joe. Following his discharge, Clyde went back to the farm for a short period of time. He returned to Billings and enrolled in Rocky Mountain College, earning his degree in accounting and passing his CPA exam. Through the years, Clyde led many accounting firms. He also taught at Rocky Mountain College and Billings Business College while still farming and running his own accounting business. In 1951, Clyde and Monica purchased a new house on 1131 Terry Ave. Over the years, this house and the hospitality provided by Monica was an oasis to many family and friends. They resided there until Clyde's death. In the late 1960s Clyde and partner, Dick Gardner, purchased land by Lake Elmo now known as The Rolling Hills sub-division. Many good times were had by the family and friends picnicking and riding horses at the lake. Clyde completely retired from accounting in 2000, serving many loyal and grateful clients for over 50 years. Clyde enjoyed old cars and the wagon trains that he and his good friend, Jake Frank, would put on for family and friends at his Columbus farm. Clyde was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Monica; son, Leon; daughter-in-law, Robin; brother, Clair Schillinger; and sister, Thelma O'Donnell. Survivors include son, Dean (Loraine) Schillinger of the family homestead Vida, daughter Carol (Duane) Ankney of Colstrip, son Joseph Schillinger of Billings; sisters, Leola VanAtta of Billings, and Cleone Sass of Williston, N.D.; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Clyde was a very devout Catholic all his life and was a member of Holy Rosary Parish. A very special thanks to Benjamin Geordge, Theresa Sherbo and Denny Rovia for all the kindness they extended to Clyde. A vigil will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 4, at Dahl Funeral Chapel. Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, at Holy Rosary Church. Rite of Committal will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.
