She preferred to use Fern and her siblings and other family members referred to her as Fern or Fernie.) Of this union three children: 1. Jean E.: b.9 Aug 1922; d. 1 Nov 2011 2. Georgeanna: b 18 Mar 1925; d. 30 Nov 1998 3. Earl Ray: b. 25 Dec 1927; d. 31 Mar 2009 OBITUARY: The Republican (Oakland, Maryland), Thu, 11 Oct 1945 - Page 4 Mrs. Fern Messenger, a daughter of S. M. Friend and Delia A. Friend, of Sang Run, died at her home in Pittsburg on October 3rd. after an illness of pneumonia. She was married to Arra Messenger on October 31, 1921. Surviving are her husband, two daughters, Jean and George Anna; one son, Earl, who is in the navy; three grandchildren, her father, three sisters, four brothers and other relatives. Funeral services were conducted from the Methodist church at Sang Run, on Saturday, October 6, at 2:30 p.. m. by Rev. H. B. Wriston, followed by interment in the Friend Cemetery. (Transcribed by Ronn E. Friend, nephew. The "hand dated" obituary is from the family albums of her brother and sister-in-law Ralph Taft and Susan Edna Friend.) NOTE: Variation for spelling of surname Mesenger vs Messenger. The spelling of the surname in Fern's obituary and on her original grave marker is "Mesenger". A newer, second grave marker for Arra, Arra's second wife Edna, and Fern gives the surname as "Messenger." According to family members, sometime in the early 1940's Arra changed the spelling of his surname from Messenger to Mesenger with one "s." His son Earl Ray followed suit and changed his name using the one "s" Mesenger. Some time later Arra decided to change his last name back to Messenger. However, Earl Ray did not and his descendants use the one "s" Mesenger. Family members do not know why Arra initially changed the spelling of his surname to Mesenger then back again to the original Messenger.
