The Edgar Sun (Edgar, NE) Fri, Jan 21, 1927 - pg 1 Joseph Daniel Beck, son of Andrew L and Emeline S Beck was born June 15, 1840 in Adams County, Miss-issippi (sic) and died at the home of his son Frank D. Beck in Waterloo, Iowa, January 11, 1927. Mr Beck's paternal ancestors were among the early Dutch settlers of eastern Pennsylvania. His maternal ancestors were Scotch, Irish and Welsh and emigrated to Charleston, South Carolina, about the year 1800, afterward moving to Adams County, Mississippi. His parents moved to Jersey County, Illinois in March 1844, where Mr Beck grew to manhood on a farm near Otterville, Illinois. Mr Beck was married to Esther Ann Price on December 31, 1865. To this union five sons were born of whom four survive him, namely Rev S. Ambrose Beck of Notonors, Ohio, Dr Frederick L Beck of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Frank D Beck of Waterloo, Iowa and George L Beck of Corning, Iowa. the second son, Edgar, died in infancy. Mrs Beck died at Edgar, Nebraska, August 20, 1880. In early manhood Mr Beck learned the blacksmith trade of O. A. Tiff in Jerseyville, Illinois. On the breaking out of the Civil War he enlisted at Grafton, Illinois in Co. F. 14th Illinois Infantry on May 25th, 1861 and was mustered out of the service in the summer of 1865. He was taken prisoner on October 6, 1864 and was confined in Andersonville prison seven months, was paroled at Jacksonville, Florida, April 28, 1865, was in battles of Shiloh, seige of Corinth, Hatchie River, Vicksburg and a number of minor engagements. Mr Beck filed on his homestead near Edgar, Nebr. in 1872. He was elected Justice of the Peace, lived in a sod house and had a sod blacksmith shop. He built one of the first frame houses in the vicinity of Edgar. After making final proof on his homestead he moved to Edgar where he followed his trade for a number of years. He helped to organize the Edgar Methodist Church and was one of its first officials. For a number of years he has made his home with his son, Frank D. Beck at Waterloo, Iowa. There were two sisters and three brothers to precede Mr Beck in death. Two sisters survive him, Mrs Frances M. Barber of Lincoln and Mrs Josephine E. Keana of Gridley, California. Funeral services were conducted from the M. E. Church at Edgar, Nebraska, Friday, Jan 14, 1927 at 2:30 P. M., Rev Charles A.
